Hours: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4pm, plus additional hours as required

About the p.i.n.e. project:

The p.i.n.e. project fosters confidence, competence, resilience and connection to nature through transformative outdoor experiences for all ages in Toronto and beyond. Our work inspires a vital re-connection between people and nature, community and oneself. We work primarily with children and families in the urban context, delivering innovative year-round outdoor programming. Our programs include weekly programming for children during the school year, overnight camps in South Central Ontario, as well as highly sought-after day camps in Toronto. Position summary:

The p.i.n.e. project is seeking Assistant Instructors for our Urban Summer Day Camps in Toronto. This position is ideal for those looking to build experience working with kids, learn about nature and survival, and be mentored by experienced outdoor educators, while supporting the delivery of our summer programs. Assistant Instructors must be students, who are currently enrolled in full-time studies (secondary or post-secondary education) and will be continuing full-time studies in September 2019.

You’ll receive excellent training in nature connection and inquiry-based learning from our highly-skilled Camp Managers. Throughout the summer, you’ll have the opportunity to get to know incredible ecosystems, gain survival skills that keep you alive and thriving in the wilderness, and learn to pass on your skills and knowledge to campers in inspiring ways using our highly effective mentoring methodology. Duties and responsibilities:

  • Support learning and recreational experiences in nature with campers ages 4-12

  • Support groups of up to 12 campers with a Lead instructor

  • Support the development of camp culture by participating in skits, songs, and games

  • Integrate and support volunteers into camp culture

  • Support and participate in program planning, development, and prep/debrief meetings

  • Support After Care when required

  • Participate in a staff training week and a camp take-down weekend

  • Be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in full-time studies (secondary or post-secondary education) and will be continuing full-time studies in September 2019

  • Up to date Police Vulnerable Sectors Check

  • Up to date Standard First Aid and CPR-C or higher

  • Minimum 1 year experience working with children in a mentorship role

Staff must:

  • Be enthusiastic, outgoing, and flexible

  • Have experience working with children

  • Be able and willing to work as part of a team

  • Have good communication, time management, and organizational skills

  • Show maturity and the ability to practice good judgement

  • Identify with p.i.n.e.'s mission statement and core values

  • Have a desire to further their own naturalist/wilderness skills, mentoring techniques, and/or nature connection through professional development opportunities with p.i.n.e. staff members

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the following areas:

  • Working in camp settings

  • Outdoor and environmental education

  • Naturalist experience and knowledge

  • Survival skills, wilderness experience
