Position: Communications Assistant (Summer Internship)

EcoSpark Backgrounder: EcoSpark is an environmental charity that empowers people to take an active role in protecting and sustaining nature. We do this by giving people the tools for education, monitoring and influencing positive change. We have a strong reputation in the areas of education, citizen science, community engagement and collaboration. Position Description: We are looking for an outgoing, enthusiastic, creative and well-organized individual to join EcoSpark this summer. The successful intern will work with work directly with the EcoSpark team to promote the great work of the organization through a variety of communication tools and summer events to reach a wide variety of audiences. The intern will also research future outreach opportunities to increase the awareness about EcoSpark and its positive environmental impact.

This is a full-time seasonal 8-week contract from July 9 to August 31 2018.

Position Responsibilities/Tasks:

  • Promote EcoSpark’s work through different media outlets and channels (e.g., traditional media, social media, e-newsletter, and EcoSpark’s website)
  • Promote EcoSpark at summer events and festivals to a wide variety of audiences
  • Prepare content for EcoSpark’s e-newsletter
  • Write blogs that align with and promote EcoSpark’s work
  • Compile a series of guest blogs for future website content
  • Ensure regular content on EcoSpark’s social media outlets and increase EcoSpark’s social media reach
  • Provide general support to staff, including some administrative duties
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Personal and professional interest in the environment sector
  • Positive energy and enthusiasm
  • Well demonstrated research, organizational and time-management skills
  • Superior communication skills – both written and verbal
  • Self-direction as well as good team work abilities
  • Experience with social media platforms
  • Experience with traditional media (e.g. prepare media advisories and releases)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Valid driver’s license is an asset
  • Experience working or volunteering with a not-for-profit is an asset

This internship is funded through Canada Summer Jobs. To quality, the successful student must meet the following requirements:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with Ontario legislation and regulations

Employment Type: Full Time (8 weeks from July 9 to August 31, 2018). Weekend and evening work will be required from time-to-time.

Salary: $15/hr for 8 weeks

Start Date: July 9, 2018

Location: Toronto, ON with travel throughout the Greater Toronto Area

Reports to: Executive Director
