Position: SNAP Habitat Restoration Team Leader
Type: summer job / summer student position

Term: May 6 – August 23, 2019
Hours: 40 hours/week, Monday – Friday, with potential for some weekend and evening work

About Surrey’s Natural Areas Partnership:

SNAP is a unique youth-focused program operated as a partnership between three local non-profits and the City of Surrey, administered by the Green Timbers Heritage Society. Our objectives are to:

  • restore and enhance Surrey’s natural areas and wildlife habitat;
  • raise awareness of the benefits of nature, and the importance of Surrey’s urban forest;
  • encourage public participation in the stewardship of Surrey’s parks and trees; and
  • empower youth to become future leaders in environmental education and conservation.

Position Description:

Habitat Restoration Team Leaders will each lead a team of staff to implement restoration projects (e.g. invasive plant removal, park clean-ups, small wildlife projects, trail closures, planting maintenance) in Surrey parks, under the direction of the SNAP Program Coordinator. This is a field-based position. Successful applicants will receive training and experience in environmental restoration and habitat enhancement techniques.


  • Assist with the training, supervision, and evaluation of team members and volunteers;
  • Maintain accurate daily records, track project deliverables, provide updates and progress reports to supervisors, and write a final report;
  • Ensure work is completed in a safe and efficient manner;
  • Communicate with the public as an ambassador of SNAP and our partner organizations;
  • Occasionally assist other SNAP teams with staffing special events, leading community stewardship events, and other educational outreach activities;
  • Other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Some post-secondary study in a related field such as urban forestry, biology, geography, environmental science or environmental studies;
  • Knowledge of basic ecological principles and of local plant communities; demonstrated ability to identify common native and invasive plants;
  • Demonstrated experience working outdoors, and willingness/ability to perform repetitive, physically demanding work in all weather conditions;
  • Supervisory and/or leadership experience; ability to foster a positive, productive and collaborative team environment while maintaining safety and work quality;
  • Strong time management and organizational skills; ability to handle multiple priorities and changing circumstances;
  • Strong public relations, interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30lbs
  • Provide steel-toed boots;
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence with a safe driving history, and willingness to submit a driver’s abstract;
  • Valid level 1 First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to the start of employment);
  • As a condition of pending Canada Summer Jobs program funding:
    • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
    • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and
    • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada and BC.
  • Completion of a Police Information Check will be required as a condition of employment.
