SUMMER STUDENT JOB

Position: SNAP Youth Team Leader
Type: summer job / age 30 & under
Organization: Green Timbers Heritage Society
Location: Surrey, Greater Vancouver BC

Term: May 4 - August 21, 2020
Hours: 40 hours/week, Monday - Friday, with potential for some weekend and evening work

About Surrey’s Natural Areas Partnership:
Surrey’s Natural Areas Partnership (SNAP) is a unique partnership between three local non-profit organizations and the City of Surrey. SNAP’s goals are to restore and enhance Surrey’s urban forest; to promote environmental stewardship; and to empower youth as future leaders in environmental conservation.

Position Description:
The Youth Team Leader will lead a team of high school students to implement habitat restoration (e.g. invasive plant removal), tree care (e.g. tree well installation and maintenance) and youth engagement projects throughout Surrey, under the direction of the SNAP Program Coordinator. This is a field-based position.

Duties:

• Assist with the hiring, supervision, training and evaluation of team members
• Assist in identifying and developing youth engagement opportunities
• Build connections between SNAP and other youth service providers in Surrey
• Ensure work is completed in a safe and efficient manner
• Maintain accurate daily records, track project deliverables, provide progress reports to supervisors, and write a final report
• Communicate with the public as an ambassador of SNAP and our partner organizations
• Occasionally assist other SNAP teams with staffing youth focused events
• Other related duties as required

Required Qualifications:

• Some post-secondary study in a related field such as urban forestry, biology, geography, environmental studies, education, recreation or communications
• Demonstrated willingness and ability to perform repetitive, physical work in all weather conditions
• Supervisory and/or leadership experience, preferably in youth engagement
• Strong time management and organizational skills
• Strong public relations, interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
• Ability to lift and carry up to 30lbs
• Knowledge of ecological principles, and ability to identify native and invasive plants
• Knowledge of basic tree maintenance, and ability to identify common shade trees
• Knowledge of youth engagement principles
• Provide steel-toed boots
• Valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence with a safe driving history, and willingness to submit a driver’s abstract
• Valid level 1 First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to the start of employment)
• Completion of a Police Information Check will be required as a condition of employment


• As a condition of pending Canada Summer Jobs program funding (note, these criteria are subject to change):

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada and BC
