Hiring Poster Link

BC Ferries, Parks Canada and Ocean Wise are seeking highly motivated individuals with exceptional communication skills to deliver the summer 2019 Coastal Naturalist program from May to September. Coastal Naturalists inform, educate and inspire customers about the wonders of BC’s coast, while travelling on board BC Ferries vessels and through terminals.

Coastal Naturalist positions are based in Victoria, Vancouver, and/or Nanaimo.

Training will consist of a paid interpretive skills workshop followed by paid skills and content development workshops. Naturalists will engage customers informally through roving and conversations, and will deliver interactive presentations.

Presentations are focused on educating passengers on the wonders of the BC coast, sharing information on local culture, history, wildlife and geography, including the work that BC Ferries and Ocean Wise do in this arena, as well as BC’s coastal National Park Reserves and National Historic Sites.

Successful applicants must commit to the entire program term including the full training period and all scheduled presentation days. Coastal Naturalist positions are full time and include weekends and statutory holidays.

Successful candidates will demonstrate their ability to:

  • Communicate information in an interesting, engaging and inspiring manner.
  • Initiate conversations, interact and engage with customers.
  • Assess audiences and respond to changing audience needs and interests.
  • Work independently and fulfill job requirements in a nonsupervised environment.
  • Adapt and personalize presentations through selfdirected research to support program themes and verify accuracy of content.

All candidates will be assessed on the following:

  • Ability to present an informative, entertaining and engaging interpretive program.
  • Proven public interaction and presentation abilities.
  • Proven decision-making skills and adaptability.
  • Reliability and accountability.
  • Knowledge of program content (i.e. natural geography, wildlife and marine life, cultural history of southern Vancouver Island, coastal Lower Mainland and Gulf Islands and marine history).

Interested candidates are invited to apply online and upload a resume and cover letter.

Candidates who pass the initial screening will be invited to an audition. A short list of successful audition candidates will then be invited to an in-depth interview on the following day.

Timing and Deadlines

Application DEADLINE: Tuesday, February 12th, 2019.

Interviews will ONLY be held in Victoria on February 25th (with second-round call-backs on February 26th and 27th), and in Vancouver on March 6th (call-backs March 7th and 8th). You will be asked to indicate your preferred interview location.
