Coastal Naturalist Program 2018
Position: Coastal Naturalists
Terms: up to 9 positions, f/t & p/t, June 27 to Sept 3 (see below)
Organization: BC Ferries & Parks Canada
Location: Vancouver, Victoria & Nanaimo BC
On behalf of BC Ferries and Parks Canada, Calliope Consulting Inc. is seeking highly motivated individuals with exceptional communication skills to deliver the summer 2018 Coastal Naturalist Program. Coastal Naturalists inform, educate and inspire customers about the wonders of British Columbia’s coast, while traveling onboard BC Ferries vessels between Vancouver (Tsawwassen) and Victoria (Swartz Bay), and Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) and Nanaimo (Departure Bay).
Up to nine Coastal Naturalist positions are available, including full time (4 days per week) and part time (2 to 3 days per week), based in Victoria, Vancouver, and/or Nanaimo.
Training will consist of a one-week paid interpretive skills workshop starting May 14, followed by three weeks of paid interpretive skills development, program content development workshops, on-site visits to significant areas and presentation rehearsals onboard starting June 11. The onboard seasons will begin June 27 and run to September 3, 2018.
Once the onboard season starts, the daily schedule is based on an 8-to-9 hour work day consisting of four sailings. Naturalists will engage customers informally through roving and conversations, and deliver a 20-minute outdoor presentation during each voyage. Presentation content is focused on BC’s wildlife, marine life, culture, history, geography and BC’s coastal national parks. Coastal Naturalists receive rigourous interpretive training from Parks Canada Staff and work with experienced Coastal Naturalists from previous summer seasons.
