Position: Recycling Outreach Assistant
Organization: Recycle BC
Location: Vancouver BC

Short-Term Contract: July 3 – September 1, 2018

If you are interested in recycling operations and have related experience, the Recycle BC Field Services team is looking for a self-motivated candidate with strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills to support education and outreach related to the new collection of Other Flexible Plastic Packaging at depots around BC, adding to the list of materials we are currently collecting.

Reporting to the Manager, Field Services, this role will help to provide awareness with the public and depot staff in understanding Other Flexible Plastic Packaging in conjunction with our other materials being recycled. As a field services position, this role requires extensive travel within the province to meet with collection partners. This is an independent role which requires the ability to prioritize and coordinate on a continuous basis, with a high level of accountability expected.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitoring and reporting of the daily collection and transfer of residential packaging and paper at drop-off depots and transfer stations continuously during the workday. This includes interacting with operations staff and the public.
  • Evaluating program compliance; preventing contamination, ensuring only residential materials are dropped off, and ensuring proper worksite standards are maintained.
  • Attending public events to promote the Recycle BC program and the collection of Other Flexible Plastic Packaging materials.
  • Providing in-field training for our collectors on established Recycle BC policies and practices.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Experience interacting with the public, preferably in a position providing information or guidance.
  • Ability to work independently, take accountability, prioritize tasks and be self-managed.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and problem solving skills required.
  • Education related to environmental studies, sustainability, or a related field would be preferred.
  • Experience in packaging and paper recycling or a related field, operational optimization, waste management, logistics contracting or related operational business roles is beneficial but not necessary.
  • Requirement to travel throughout BC for short-term stays. A valid BC driver’s license and access to a vehicle in good working condition is required.
