Parkbus connects city dwellers with nature through accessible transportation options. Founded in 2010, we operate bus services to National and Provincial Parks from major cities across Canada. We also operate community nature and outdoor programs such as ActiveDays and NatureLink. In Vancouver, our programs are run by Better Environmentally Sound Transportation (BEST), a BC-based charitable non-profit organization dedicated to fostering sustainable tourism and transportation. In the rest of Canada, our programs are run by Transportation Options , an Ontario based non-profit organization dedicated to fostering sustainable tourism and transportation.
Parkbus is hiring an ActiveDays Facilitator to aid in delivering our ActiveDays: Toronto Programs. We’re looking for an individual with experience in education, facilitation, guiding and/or project coordination/administration. The ActiveDays Facilitator must have a passion for the outdoors and an ability to create inclusive spaces.
ActiveDays uses planned outdoor programming to create a community of outdoor enthusiasts that feels inclusive to newcomers, low income families and members of visible minorities.
The ActiveDays Facilitator will work closely with the ActiveDays Coordinator to help with the programming and administrative duties. The facilitator will co-lead outdoor group programming (such as group hikes), assist with event logistics, and assist with ongoing communication and help develop day-programming.
The ActiveDays Facilitator must have excellent interpersonal communication skills. Experience working within groups and experience leading groups of people are strong assets. An interest in education and community building is preferred. Individuals who have held leadership positions in outdoor environments are preferred. The facilitator must have a passion for the outdoors. The facilitator also must be organized and able to juggle multiple administrative duties. An ability to speak another language is desirable.
This position is based out of Toronto, Ontario. Most programs will be day trips out of Toronto. This position is a full time contract for 8 weeks. The Facilitator will be required to lead programs on weekends throughout the summer — expect to work one or two days outdoors each weekend.
Work as a representative of Parkbus, primarily on any scheduled ActiveDays trips and community outings
Facilitating active, nature-based programs that get participants outside and exploring. Facilitate groups of up to 50 clients from a variety of backgrounds (i.e. people facing cultural/language barriers, and other challenging scenarios) on outings. We lead group hikes, trail runs, and educational excursions that allow individuals to discover beautiful places, meet like-minded people and disconnect from city life.
Community building is a key component to these programs. These programs aim to create a community of like-minded individuals who have a passion to get outside and explore. Facilitating open conversations and creating an environment of inclusion is central to the role.
Work with the Parkbus ActiveDays Director on planning trip programming for nature hikes and organizing social games
Submit written reports on all trips
Possibility of creating and publishing content on Parkbus and ActiveDays communication tools
Source, prepare, and gather program materials when necessary
Support Coordinator to research and develop new programs
Handle the risk management duties of taking groups of people into the outdoors.
Candidates must be between the ages of 15-30, as this is a Canada Summer Jobs funded position
Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Experience working within groups and experience leading groups of people are strong assets.
An interest in education, community building and/or the outdoors is preferred.
Individuals who have held leadership positions in outdoor environments are preferred. Experience working with groups of people in an outdoor setting and/or experience facilitating workshops and programs for groups.
A passion for the outdoors — a knowledge of local trails and outdoor spaces in and around Toronto
Strong attention to detail, ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Must have experience working with diverse groups of people.
Excellent written and verbal communication.
Ability to juggle multiple administrative duties.
Good command of English, fluency in a second language is an asset
First Aid (Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) is preferred)
Other outdoor guiding and safety certifications.
