Community Gardens Engagement Assistant (Summer Work Opportunity)

30 hours per week for 9 weeks, summer 2019

The position: Ecosource is seeking a Community Gardens Engagement Assistant for our Community Gardens programs in Mississauga to support community engagement through the delivery of outdoor, experiential education programs at our community gardens.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the delivery of educational workshops and events hosted at Ecosource garden spaces, including the Malton Community Garden and Local Food Hub.
  • Assist with the delivery of accessible garden programs, including facilitating hands-on activities for youth with physical and developmental exceptionalities.
  • Prepare educational materials and activities for school and community groups.
  • Work with community volunteers of all ages to grow organic vegetables for local food banks and assist with daily garden maintenance at the community gardens under the supervision of Ecosource staff.
  • Assist with programming for physical accessibility in outdoor recreation and language accessibility for our multi-lingual community.
  • Coordinate regular email, written and telephone communication with program participants.
  • Track garden related program statistics, harvest data, etc.
  • Act as a representative of Ecosource at community events to support outreach for community gardening initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • A passion for food security principles, organic gardening and /or related environmental issues.
  • Strong belief in creating social change by empowering individuals and families to produce their own food.
  • Food gardening experience (preferred but not essential, training will be provided).
  • Willingness to undertake physical tasks in an outdoor setting, in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Experience working with volunteers and delivering educational programming to a diverse audience. Energetic individual with an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience facilitating programs for youth with physical and developmental exceptionalities.
  • Highly observant with an attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to deal compassionately with all members of the community.
  • Good organizational skills, responsible and creative approach to tasks and problem solving.
  • Fluency in a language represented in our garden communities is an asset (e.g., Punjabi, Urdu, Italian, Gujarati, Tamil).
  • Familiarity with the environmental sector and programming in the Region of Peel.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable vehicle for transportation.
  • Due to funding requirements, the successful candidate MUST be 15-29 years of age and legally able to work in Canada.

Application Information:

This is a short-term 9-week summer contract position at 30 hours per week, paid at a rate of $14 per hour. Regular weekend and some evening work will be required. A Police Check will be required upon hiring.
