Position: Citizen Science Assistant (Summer Internship)

Position Description: We are looking for a dynamic, friendly, outgoing, and well-organized individual to join EcoSpark this summer! The successful candidate will work the EcoSpark team to assist in citizen science programming that empowers people to be environmental champions in their community. The assistant will provide facilitation and field support for our award-winning water quality monitoring program with youth and adults. The assistant will also provide field support for our citizen science project to control invasive species (e.g. phragmities) and to promote native biodiversity in public greenspaces. In addition, there will be opportunities to help develop resources to further engage youth and adults in the monitoring of urban stream health and in the protection of native biodiversity in public greenspaces.

This is a full-time seasonal 8-week contract from July 9 to August 31 2018.

Position Responsibilities/Tasks:

  • Assist in the facilitation of stream monitoring and stewardship events
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to youth participants
  • Support the organization of logistics of citizen science events and coordinate program registrations
  • Assist in providing provide data quality control/assurance and data management support of our citizen science data
  • Assist in program promotion and communications
  • Provide program evaluation support
  • Provide general support to staff, including some administrative duties
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Candidate for university degree or college diploma in environmental studies or an environmentally-related discipline
  • Ontario Benthos Bio-Monitoring Network (OBBN) certification is an asset
  • Experience facilitating workshops with students or community members
  • Experience (paid or volunteer) in environmental programming or monitoring
  • Proven time management and organizational skills
  • Clear communication skills – both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Comfort with putting on hip waders and getting into streams!
  • Valid G Drivers’ Permit
  • First Aid Certification

This internship is funded through Canada Summer Jobs. To quality, the successful student must meet the following requirements:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with Ontario legislation and regulations

Employment Type: Full Time (8 weeks from July 9 to August 31, 2018). Weekend and evening work will be required from time-to-time.

Salary: $15/hr for 8 weeks

Start Date: July 9, 2018

Location: Toronto, ON with travel throughout the Greater Toronto Area
