Position: Toronto Harbour Monitoring Hub Assistant

Swim Drink Fish Canada is a growing charity working for a swimmable, drinkable, fishable future. Our programs bring together law, science, culture, and digital media in order to connect and empower people to restore polluted places, protect human health, and promote thriving natural spaces.

We are hiring a Monitoring Hub Assistant to help run the Toronto Community Monitoring Hub for the summer of 2019. This program serves the entire waterfront community and the City of Toronto by providing recreational water quality data in areas that are vulnerable to contamination but are not currently monitored by Toronto Public Health.


  • Help deliver the summer-long water monitoring program.

  • Work in the field and lab, and be trained to take, process, and analyze recreational water quality samples.

  • Take volunteer teams out to gather water samples and gather important environmental data at several sites along the Toronto waterfront.

  • Promote water literacy in Toronto communities through this citizen science-based program on recreational water quality of Lake Ontario.

  • Help execute water sampling engagement events with Swim Drink Fish stakeholders to promote citizen science, water monitoring, and relevant recreational water quality.

  • Update beach and water quality information for Swim Guide during the height of beach monitoring season (Memorial Day - Labour Day). The Swim Guide is an online resource that provides 3,000,000 users with access to the latest water quality monitoring results for over 8,000 of beaches in 9 countries.

  • Help create reports using Swim Guide data, that will be used in research such as the Toronto Harbour Monitoring Report, and the Great Lakes Beach Report and reports on local beaches to help the public understand water quality.


  • You are familiar with recreational water quality issues and have the ability to quickly learn common terms and background on issues affecting beach water quality;

  • You are committed to accurate, accountable, and detailed fieldwork and data collection;

  • You are passionate about protecting waterways;

  • You are very comfortable with computers, databases, and/or information management;

  • You are a skilled communicator with experience working with partners across a variety of cities and cultures;

  • You have a keen attention to detail;

  • You are a team player, with a positive attitude who is cooperative, and helpful;

  • You are an independent problem-solver

This is a full-time contract position - 37.5 hrs/week, May to August.
