Positions: Research Assistant and Marketing Assistant
Type: summer job / summer student position
Location: Ottawa, Ontario
If you care about the environment and renewable energy, this may be the challenge for you.
We are looking for 2 students: Research Assistant and Marketing Assistant
NOTE: these summer positions are funded under Canada Summer Jobs. Only students in class last term, who are returning in September, are eligible to apply. We have agreed to make special efforts to hire priority students (disability, Indigenous, visible minority, new immigrant/refugee).
One of the largest sources of renewable energy is a ground source heat pump; the trouble is, no-one knows it. The federal energy department says there were 95,000 systems in 2010, producing 1,420 GWh (1.4 billion kWh) of thermal energy each year.
There are numerous benefits to ground source / geothermal technology, and the challenge will be to help find and promote these benefits in the most creative manner possible.
To see if this summer position is of interest, go to http://NetZeroPlus.ca and click on links, especially the short video @ http://NetZero.cf. The video will provide clues to the research required, while the old EarthEnergy site will underscore the need for updated marketing of this technology.
The analysis of energy consumption, GHG emissions and more, will cover the residential & commercial sectors in all regions of Canada, and evaluate the implications of greater penetration. To over-simplify, the need to heat & cool buildings, and heat water, consumes 22% of ALL energy used in Canada (86% in homes; 68% in offices).
The 2 positions will complement each other; by the end of the summer, content will be posted to a number of web sites to promote the technology and its benefits. Both Assistants will receive a rigorous orientation on heat pump technology and the engineering principles behind its operation, and then will be directed to achieve specific research / marketing goals by agreed deadlines. The work will be executed at your home, with weekly meetings and daily updates to ensure progress.
Ideally, you are pursuing a post-secondary course in engineering / science / HVAC or marketing / communications / graphic design / computer and web design. Women in a STEM course would be ideal.
Additional skills that will make your application stand out:
• bilingual & able to handle simple translation
• web design & online form entry, including analytics & metatags
• acumen in social media marketing
Details on the work period:
• eight (8) weeks duration
• 30 hours per week
• $14 per hour + 4% vacation pay at end
• very flexible schedule (work when you want, as long as weekly deadlines as met)
