Positions: Outdoor Camp Counsellor

Location: Port Perry, Ontario

Dogwood Acres Camp is a private outdoor swim and day camp run on 57 acres of forested park. We aspire to promote the growth of our campers in areas of Physical Health & Fitness, Character Education and Environmental Awareness & Appreciation. We provide swimming and leadership opportunities for our campers ranging in age from 5 – 16 years old.


Dogwood Acres Camp is looking for dynamic, energetic, and motivated individuals to fill various Camp Counsellor positions for Summer 2019. We operate entirely outdoors in rain or shine for 5 weeks throughout the summer from 8am to 4:45pm.


Job Responsibilities

  • Swimming Lessons:
    • Maintain safety on deck and in the pool at all times
    • Comprehensive knowledge of Red Cross swim levels & progressions
    • Lesson plans, worksheets, report cards completed daily
    • Strong knowledge of students’ strengths/weaknesses
    • Provide support and leadership to WSI candidates to ensure effective instruction
  • Camp Roles:
    • Lead Meet & Greet each morning: greet campers, take attendance, and lead campers to hang up belongings and find their House
    • Co-facilitate afternoon Focus Program & Camp wide activities and games
    • Lifeguard afternoon pond activities
    • Other camp duties as assigned

Specific Job Requirements & Experience

  • Current SFA and WSI; current NLS preferred
  • 1+ years experience in an instructional aquatic and camp setting
  • Completed Grade 10


Job Responsibilities

  • Implement and lead High 5 Program during morning swimming lessons
    • High 5 Program: a character education program that focuses on building friends, team building skills, and fun through games and activities
  • Manage transitions of swimmers from pool to change rooms to High 5 Program
  • Prepare & clean up materials and supplies for program

Job Requirements & Experience

  • Current Standard First Aid; Current Water Safety Instructor and NLS preferred
  • 1+ years experience in a camp setting and/or educational environment working directly with children
  • Completed Grade 10


Job Responsibilities

  • Manage Morning Care campers, including prep and clean up of materials used
  • Prepare/Clean Up & Assist/Lead: Nature Fit, Afternoon Focus and Camp Wide Programs
    • Nature Fit: an outdoor education and healthy active living program that involves daily hikes, forest exploration, and games
  • Primary lead for Outdoor Recreation Focus Program
    • Outdoor Recreation Focus Program: an outdoor education program focussing on survival skills, orienteering, and forest exploration

Specific Job Requirements & Experience

  • Current Standard First Aid; current NLS preferred
  • 1+ years leadership experience in an outdoor recreational setting
  • Outdoor/environmentalist/naturalist experience and knowledge is preferred (i.e. plant and tree ID, animal ID and tracking, orienteering, survival skills, etc.)
  • Completed Grade 10


  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check dated within 6 months of hire (18 years of age or older)
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C or higher mandatory


  • Based on age, experience and qualifications
