Position: Communications Assistant
Type: summer job / age 30 & under

The Toronto Environmental Alliance is hiring a Communications Assistant for a 9-week contract. This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Program.

Contract: 9 weeks at 30 hours/week
Pay: $15.00 per hour

Who We Are:

For over 30 years, the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) has been advocating on behalf of Torontonians for a green, healthy and equitable city. TEA is a registered non-profit that is recognized Canada-wide for our municipal work on climate change, waste and pollution prevention, and other issues that are critical to the health and well-being of Toronto residents. To promote a greener Toronto, TEA works with concerned individuals, workers, grassroots organizations, businesses, professional associations, and elected officials.

The Position:

The Communications Assistant will work closely with TEA’s Communications Manager, and will collaborate with and support teams across the organization, including campaigns, projects and development staff.

Due to COVID-19, the Toronto Environmental Alliance staff team are currently working remotely. The Communications Assistant will work remotely, and the successful applicant will need to be comfortable with remote work and communicating and collaborating over online platforms and video conferencing.

Responsibilities

  • Support content creation for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, schedule posts in Hootsuite, and track metrics.
  • Edit, post, and contribute to website content, including supporting a summer website refresh.
  • Support email communications, including formatting email newsletters and setting up email segments.
  • Source, create and edit images and graphics for digital and print content.
  • Participate in communications meetings. Support communications planning, including maintaining editorial calendars.
  • Compile metrics, update tracking documents, and help maintain TEA’s NationBuilder database. Help to create and maintain digital tools, such as surveys and digital advocacy tools.
  • Assist with conducting and transcribing interviews, taking meeting notes, compiling quotes, and organizing photo libraries, to develop stories from projects and campaigns.
  • Provide some support for online events and programming, such as webinars and online learning sessions.
  • Provide some data entry and administrative support.

Qualifications

  • A combination of experience (such as volunteer experience) and education/knowledge of communications, marketing, digital campaigns or related field.
  • Strong interest in and awareness of environmental issues and social justice issues. Commitment to TEA’s equity-focused approach to environmental issues.
  • Strong written communications skills. Ability to write concisely and communicate complex information.
  • Experience with graphic design, photography, videography, web design or other digital skills would be an asset. Applicants with skills in video, design, photography and/or writing will have opportunities to build these skills and create content for TEA’s communications channels.
  • Able to occasionally work evenings, where required.
  • Comfortable working remotely and communicating and collaborating over online platforms and video conferencing.

This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program. To be eligible, the successful applicant must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment;
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
