Job Title: Farm Assistant
Type: summer / age 30 & under
Project: Edible Garden Project, North Shore Neighbourhood House
Location: North Vancouver, BC

Wage: $16/hr

Job terms: 35 hours/week, for 16 weeks (commencing as soon as possible)

About the Employer

The Edible Garden Project (EGP) is a program of the North Shore Neighbourhood House (NSNH) that is committed to improving access to local food for the community of North Vancouver. The EGP develops partnerships and empowers community members to supply high quality, nutritious, fresh produce to those most in need in the community. The EGP runs skill-share sessions for volunteers and hosts workshops on a variety of topics regarding food security.

Position Overview

The Farm Assistant will work closely with the Farm Coordinator to support the on-going farm operations. They will help to ensure accurate records of farm activities are kept and will participate in twice-weekly harvests during market season. The Farm Assistant will support the Market Coordinator to manage twice-weekly farm markets. They will also help to supervise farm interns and volunteers, with support and guidance from the Program Coordinator and the Farm Manager. The Farm Assistant will also distribute coupons to community members as part of the Farmers Market Nutrition Coupon Program (FMNCP).

General Responsibilities

  • Assist in the management and maintenance of our two social enterprise urban farms to grow food to sell in our community
  • Ongoing watering, maintenance, potting up, organization, record keeping
  • Garden maintenance including weeding, thinning, pruning, transplanting, watering, adding amendments
  • Assist at farm gate sales including preparation, setup, sales, restocking, takedown, etc
  • Answer questions at market, at community events, and “over the fence” to interested community members
  • Coordinate volunteers at community work parties and other volunteer events
  • Distribute coupons to participants of the FMNCP

Qualifications & Eligibility

  • Candidate must be under 30 years of age to satisfy grant stipulations
  • Ideally some experience in a mixed vegetable market farm enterprise situation
  • Excellent communication skills, great team player
  • Ability to work long hours and maintain a flexible schedule, with occasional evening work required in market season
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs safely
  • Experience with customer service, cash handling, communicating with the public
  • Experience supervising volunteers
  • Experience working in a non-profit environment and knowledge/experience with social enterprise an asset
