General Description

This is an excellent opportunity for an organized, hardworking student to gain valuable leadership experience. The ideal candidate will be outgoing and detail-oriented with an independent work ethic, and passionate about the innovative work that Mosqoy is doing in Peru. This position will allow the ideal candidate to learn about social enterprises, community-based international development, and culturally responsible tourism.

Skills Needed

  • Self-starter, with a high degree of motivation and initiative. Ability to work independently but take direction well.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (both written & verbal).
  • Knowledge of Indigenous land, language, and cultural rights issues, both in Canada and globally.
  • Good interpersonal skills, and ability to work in a multi-cultural, collaborative environment.
  • Excellent administrative skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills: experience with Microsoft Office, Excel spreadsheets, Google drive, and Skype.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Related post-secondary degree (in-progress or completed).

Assets

  • Previous experience working with a social enterprise and/or not-for-profit organization
  • Previous marketing experience
  • Previous experience in the tourism industry, especially community-based tourism, eco-tourism, and culturally-responsible tourism
  • Experience working with Indigenous-run organizations and/or connections with local Indigenous communities
  • Previous fundraising experience
  • Basic understanding of the Spanish language
  • Creative mindset and the ability to identify new strategic opportunities

Organizational Information

Mosqoy is an international charitable organization that provides economic opportunities for rural highland communities in the Peruvian Andes, while nurturing their threatened indigenous culture. We do so through three main programs: a textile revitalization program, a post-secondary scholarship program, and a knowledge exchange program. Duties

The student will be working directly with our knowledge exchange program to help develop and implement workshops, lectures, and curricula relating to our Mosqoy Field School. This program focuses on educating Canadian youth about international issues relating to human rights, with specific focus on educational and cultural rights. As part of this, the program inspires Canadian youth to be more responsible travelers and consumers. Some of the student’s tasks will include the following:

  • Acting as public contact for questions & answers relating to our Mosqoy Field School and Mink’a Knowledge Exchange Program
  • Assisting to create curricula and itineraries for upcoming field courses, based in the Andean mountains of Peru (at the university and high-school levels)
  • Collating reading materials and supplementary learning materials for partnering schools
  • Acting as logistics coordinator, by assisting with bookings, scheduling, and streamlining information in our databases
  • Creating marketing materials for day-tour offerings, and assisting the marketing team to promote day tours and increase clientele.
  • Assisting with grant-writing and socially responsible corporate partnerships that are specific to Field School development and capital

Canada Summer Jobs Prerequisites

Please note that this position is funded through a Canada Summer Jobs grant. Therefore, to be eligible for this position, all applicants must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
