SUMMER STUDENT JOB

Position: Beach Hero Marine Interpreter
Type: summer job / summer student position

OVERVIEW

Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society is inviting applications for 2 summer student positions as Beach Hero Interpreters. Successful candidate(s) will deliver interpretive marine walks to visitors, collect recreational use data on beaches around Boundary Bay and the White Rock & Blackie Spit piers.

DESCRIPTION of both Interpreter Positions from May 17th until August 7th

  • Work closely with FoSBS team and also work independently
  • Present beach intertidal life and habitats through informative and engaging marine interpreted walks for all ages of beach goers
  • Act as roving interpreter around the intertidal zone and foreshore, as well as provide interpretation for scheduled beach walks
  • Inform beach visitors about beach conservation values and etiquette, and about safe and appropriate behaviour on the beach
  • Promote (online, press, etc.) weekly beach walks for the public, and collect appropriate evidence of promotion for final report
  • Interview recreational users, inform about proper fishing and crab fishing regulations and practices, discretely check catches and report illegal fishing activity to DFO
  • Survey beaches for shellfish harvesting and report to DFO using Observe, Record & Report system
  • Hand out informative materials, beach hero swag and callipers where appropriate
  • Attend and help organize a number of public festivals/events (including transport of materials, set up and cleanup)
  • Accurately record all beach activities, recreational use and survey data for final report
  • Carry camera at all times for photo/video evidence and take photos for final report
  • Develop new interpretive materials for program
  • Following Program End Date:
  1. Prepare final report summarizing seasons work
  2. Clean, organize and pack equipment, displays and materials

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a full-time student aged 16 to 30, planning to return to school in the fall
  • Must be a Canadian citizen
  • Must have initiative, be self motivated and outgoing
  • Current studies in marine biology or biology, education and/or geography or related is preferred but students in other disciplines will be considered
  • Valid BC drivers licence, reliable vehicle and own cell phone

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of intertidal life and marine ecosystems and interest in outdoor recreation activities
  • Familiarity with Boundary Bay beaches
  • Experience working with children of various ages
  • Interpretation and/or teaching experience
  • First aid certification

SKILLS

  • Confident, mature, outgoing and personable, able to easily approach and initiate conversation with the public
  • Excellent communication skills and enthusiasm about working with a wide variety of the public
  • Highly organized with administration skills
  • Self reliant, comfortable working independently with minimal supervision
  • Willing and able to report poaching activity to enforcement officers
  • Reliable and accurate data-keeping
  • Able to walk long distances for long period of time, handle the rigours of outdoor field activities in all weather conditions, on weekends and with variable hours with a smile

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Tentative and subject to adequate funding:

  • Paid position May 17th to August 7th, 2017
  • 5 day work week, 6 hours per day (field and reporting) and includes weekends and some holidays.
  • Training will be provided
  • Interpreter to use own vehicle, be responsible for travel expenses and own cell phone expense

WAGE: $13.75 per hour
