Position: Bike Ventures Camp Counselor

Overview:

Bike Ventures Camp is dedicated to connecting youth, ages 8-12, to the outdoors and exploring the world by mountain bike. Campers will take part in mountain bike skills sessions, trail rides, mechanical workshops, and nature play. Each child will leave with greater confidence on-road and on-trail. The Bike Ventures Camp Counselor will be responsible for delivering the Bike Ventures summer camp program.

Objectives:

  • Deliver Bike Ventures camp program with a focus on leading trail rides and skills clinics, facilitating nature play, and leading camp games (paid training provided on routes and risk management);
  • Ensure safe delivery of programs according to Evergreen policies, procedures and training;
  • Work as part of an integrated and collaborative program team to ensure that Evergreen’s core philosophies and practices are being implemented while informing emerging strategies.

  • Communication. Speak and listen in a clear, confident, respectful, thorough and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.
  • Customer-focus. Anticipate, understand, and respond to the needs of internal and external customers to meet or exceed their expectations and receives positive feedback from internal and external customers.
  • Flexibility/adaptability. Flexible, versatile and/or tolerant in a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency. Adjust quickly to changing priorities and conditions. Cope effectively with complexity and change.

Reporting Relationships:

  • Supervised by: Project Leader, Active Living
  • Supervises: Volunteers, Interns

Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience working with children
  • Strong track record in community based programs, particularly involving bikes
  • CPR-C certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Can-Bike certification (an asset)
  • Mechanical experience (an asset)
  • Mountain biking experience, particularly in the Don Valley (an asset)

Working conditions:

  • Lifting up to 40lbs
  • Working in inclement weather
  • Safely handling chemicals and tools found in a bike shop environment

Physical requirements:

  • Standing for extended periods of time
  • Lifting heavy objects on a regular basis
  • Riding a bike everyday

Terms of contract: 32-40 hours/week, seasonal from June 23 - August 31 (10 weeks)
