SUMMER CAMP POSITION

Position: Junior Counselor
Type: youth camp position with weekly stipend (see below)
Organization: VanDusen Botanical Garden
Location: Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver Botanical Gardens Association is seeking a Junior Summer Camp Counselor to support Summer Camp Leaders in the set up and delivery of day camps for children ages 5-10 at VanDusen Botanical Garden

VanDusen’s summer camps promote environmental stewardship and a love of the natural world through a fun blend of science, gardening, games, crafts and garden exploration. This year’s camps feature botany and ecology, growing and eating fresh food, birds, and citizen science.

Responsibilities

  • Support Leaders in ensuring children are safe, happy, and participating in planned programming
  • Note taking on activity successes and challenges
  • Recording camper feedback on favorite camp activities
  • Leading select activities for campers (Decided on by Junior Counselor and Leaders)
  • Taking photos of the children in action and posting them to a Flicker account for parents
  • Helping to motivate and mentor volunteers by modeling appropriate behaviours
  • Overseeing the daily setup and use of the Smart Board (training provided)

Qualifications and experience

  • An interest in education, ecology or biology
  • Experience with children (5-10 year olds) 
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully as part of a team
  • Recent Criminal Records Check (or willingness to obtain prior to start date)

Availability & Eligibility

Required 8:45am-4:15pm Monday to Friday
from June 26 – August 25, 2017

Position 2:
Required 8:45am-4:15pm, Monday to Friday
from July 24 – August 25, 2017

This position is a stipend position that pays $300 per week.
