Position: Urban Farming Program Coordinator
Organization: Earthwise Society
Location: Tsawwessen/Delta, Greater Vancouver BC

Earthwise Society has been a not-for-profit leader in ecological land use and environmental education for over 30 years. The Society operates a demonstration garden of sustainable landscape practices and organic urban food gardens at several small scale plots in South Delta. We have an exciting opportunity for an energetic and articulate individual to coordinate the implementation of an innovative new program to engage more people in growing food in our community. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Urban Farm Program Coordinator will carry out the following activities:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate start up of Don’t Mow Grow, an urban farming program based on SPIN farming models
  • Recruit and engage program participants and volunteers
  • Assess and evaluate potential new farm plots, identify program sites
  • Contribute to developing planting plans
  • Coordinate with community partners through Delta Food Coalition and other initiatives
  • Provide education and training to participants in farming tasks
  • Identify and develop markets for farm sales and distribution
  • Oversee marketing activities including restaurant sales, farmer’s markets, and CSA
  • Implement all aspects of farming operations including site preparation, planting, maintenance, harvesting, and post harvest handling
  • Set up irrigation and composting systems
  • Develop crop rotation schedules and weed management plans
  • Supervise work of staff and volunteers
  • Develop demonstration garden for winter crops
  • Provide support and assistance for Earthwise farm operations
  • Be responsible for tool and equipment use, storage and maintenance
  • Maintain records for program activities
  • Assist with the introduction of educational programs for children and adults


  • Post secondary education in agriculture, horticulture, or environmental fields
  • At least two year’s experience working in small scale or organic farming
  • Knowledge of composting and organic practices
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; experience with community outreach or environmental education an asset
  • Be self-motivated, flexible, and work well independently and in a team environment
  • Be physically fit and enjoy working outside in all kinds of weather
  • Proven ability in working effectively with volunteers and/or co-workers

Note: This position is a full time position starting September 1, 2019, with part time seasonal hours during the winter months. The position is located at 6400 3rd Avenue, Delta B.C. Weekend work will be required.
