The Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) is the national society of individuals and organisations dedicated to advancing atmospheric and oceanic sciences and related environmental disciplines in Canada. 


The CMOS Bulletin SCMO is the open-access, on-line magazine of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society, available in both English ( and French ( It covers relevant news stories, events and announcements postings, expert perspectives, and articles on the latest in research and technological developments in meteorology, oceanography, and climatology. The Bulletin is used for informing both members and the general public of the scientific news and events of the Society, in a language and format that is accessible to anyone with a general interest in weather, ocean and climate sciences.

CMOS/SCMO Council is seeking a new Editor for the Bulletin. Tasks include soliciting articles; reviewing (and editing, where required) articles for technical content, suitability, and general appeal; formatting and posting articles to the Bulletin websites; managing the websites and liaising with the web designer when required; sharing articles on social media pages; liaising with advertisers; assembling and formatting the content for the bi-monthly PDF “magazine style” issues; composing and circulating the bi-monthly e-newsletter to members and subscribers; arranging for translation when required; and other minor duties consistent with an editorial function.

The Editor works independently, but with support from CMOS/SCMO office staff and the CMOS /SCMO Director of Publications.

The tasks take 20-30 hours each month.

Required Competencies:

  • A familiarity with scientific publishing.
  • General knowledge of meteorology and/or climatology and/or oceanography.
  • Competency in Wordpress, Microsoft Publisher, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Fluency in English, though being bilingual would be a significant advantage.
  • Strong ability to self-motivate and work independently.
