Position: Forest Ecologist & Engagement Coordinator
Term: one-year f/t contract starting March 1, 2019
Organization: Ancient Forest Exploration & Research
Location: Peterborough, Ontario

The Project — Ancient Forest Exploration & Research ( will map and assess old-growth forests in Peterborough County, and advance their conservation and restoration through recruiting and training of volunteers, forming partnerships, and providing expert guidance. Lessons learned will be applied to expand the project to other portions of Ontario.

This is a one-year contract starting March 1, 2019. The ecologist/ coordinator will undertake project planning and implementation with the assistance and guidance of experienced old-growth forest ecologists.


  • Assist the project manager to develop training materials and field protocols for use by volunteer stewards (citizen scientists) who will identify and map old-growth forests, old trees, invasive species, and insect and disease-resistant trees
  • Assist with planning the outreach strategy
  • Engage community groups to establish partnerships and to recruit stewards; seek out a diversity of age groups and experience levels for recruited stewards
  • Schedule, organize, promote and deliver workshops and presentations
  • Create and implement a social media strategy that is cohesive over all applicable platforms
  • Provide field ecology training for stewards including use of GPS equipment, compass, range finder and clinometer; design of field data sheets; field sampling of forest soils, vegetation, and wildlife; plant and animal identification; tree seed forecasting and collection; invasive species early detection and mapping; and locating disease-resistant trees
  • Produce written materials including reports and marketing documents
  • GIS mapping and analyses (desired but not required)


  • Degree or diploma in biology, ecology, outdoor education, or natural resources management
  • Experience doing ecological/biological/forestry field studies; familiar with common plant species especially trees in the Peterborough County area
  • Experience in community engagement, outdoor education, and/or working with volunteers
  • Knowledge of the Peterborough community
  • Self-motivated, with strong organization and communication skills; able to work independently
  • GIS skills are a strong asset
