Position available: Communication Specialist
Organization: Up North On Climate, School of the Environment, Laurentian University
Location: Living with Lakes Centre, 840 Ramsey Lake Road, Sudbury, Ontario

Terms: Grant-funded, Sep 2019 — Mar 2021, 35 hours/week, $20 per hour, plus benefits, sick time and holidays.

The Up North On Climate group in the Living with Lakes centre at Laurentian University, is collaborating with six far north Ontario Tribal Councils in a federal government funded project designed to combine science and Traditional Knowledge in building capacity for understanding the impacts of climate change and developing adaption plans and actions in First Nation communities. The project will involve creating an innovative, interactive Climate Change Knowledge Network among First Nations and Up North On Climate. We are seeking a creative and flexible Communication Specialist to assist the team in effectively communicating climate change observations, projections and issues, using plain language text, graphics, video, and audio. All communication will be culturally appropriate for a far northern First Nation audience involved in making important recommendations and decisions affecting the future well-being of their First Nations.


  • Draft plain language stories and descriptions summarizing climate change research and knowledge suitable for posting online in the context of indigenous knowledge as well as impacts occurring and projected for the far north;
  • Develop graphics to present and explain observations and complex climate change events and phenomena;
  • Assist in the production, filming and editing of videos for indigenous audiences.


  • Post-secondary education in science, journalism, science communication or a related field;
  • Knowledge of climate change, its impacts and projections;
  • Proven track record in creating website and social media science content for a broad audience;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, respectful of ways of knowing and sensitivity to various cultures;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize and multitask;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with graphic and video editing program(s).


  • Experience working with First Nations
  • Video production experience
