Position: Retail & Visitor Experience Manager
Organization: Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea
Location: Sidney, Greater Victoria, BC

Annual Salary Range: $40-$43k. Based on 37.5 hours/week.

The Organization

The Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea’s mission is to create experiences that engage people to learn about, explore and conserve the Salish Sea Bioregion – its wildlife, waters, land, culture, and people.

Connecting the public with the Salish Sea Bioregion and its ecosystems through engagement, knowledge and awareness, the Centre offers a fun, interactive and informative experience – welcoming over 75,000 visitors a year. It is a key tourist attraction and regionally significant destination as the only aquarium in Greater Victoria/Southern Vancouver Island, and Canada's only aquarium and cultural centre for the Salish Sea. The Centre combines live aquarium habitats holding over 160 species and marine mammal artifact displays, with a permanent Coast Salish art collection, as well as public and school learning programs and locally-focused Salish Sea Store.

Located on the breathtaking Sidney waterfront - on the traditional lands of the WSÁNEC Nations of the Coast Salish Indigenous peoples - the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea opened in 2009. A unique non-profit organization, the Centre is selfsustaining relying on community support - most notably through dedicated volunteers (160) and staff (17); a title sponsorship with Shaw Communications; a key public funder - the Town of Sidney; as well as through admission fees/passes, memberships, grants and donations.

The Opportunity

The Centre is searching for a dedicated and enthusiastic leader to fill the following position - Retail and Visitor Experience Manager. This will be a full-time Sunday to Thursday position. The successful candidate will oversee and manage all operations of the admissions desk as well as the retail space. He or she will work closely with the rest of the management team to ensure a high quality experience for all of our visitors, and will report directly to the Deputy Director, Operations.

The Ideal Candidate

The Retail and Visitor Experience Manager will bring a strong managerial background, visitor service-oriented approach, experience with retail purchasing and a passion for sourcing local and sustainable products. Ideally, the candidate will have the qualifications and experience listed below.

  • Extensive retail and customer service experience
  • A minimum 5 years managerial experience
  • Experience working with local artists and sourcing Canadian-made products
  • A strong environmental ethic and desire to source sustainable materials
  • Experience with:
    • Managing, hiring and evaluating staff
    • Designing and implementing comprehensive training programs and manuals
    • Preparing bank deposits
    • Creating and managing operational budgets
    • Providing outstanding visitor and customer service experience
    • Purchasing locally sourced materials
    • Creating appealing displays and refreshing retail appearance regularly
