Position: Food Buyer

Evergreen Garden Market’s Food Buyer curates a diverse product offering of food products celebrating Evergreen’s mission of sustainability including shelf stable, refrigerated and frozen. Duties include, researching new products, timely (re)ordering, product merchandising, sales, customer service and accurate inventory lifecycle management. The Buyer works collaboratively with other Buyers, the Management Team and others to maximize sales and increase financial sustainability for Evergreen.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Inventory Lifecycle coordination
    • Research current and emerging trends/ technologies as well as monitoring industry leaders ensuring the store’s product mix is always competitive, unique and reflects Evergreen’s mission.
    • Evaluates new and existing vendors ensuring all products are consistent with Evergreen’s mission and negotiate favorable terms.
    • Analyze sales data, reorder thresholds, trends, special deals and seasonal offers to prepare Purchase Orders. Submit for approval regular and seasonal purchases orders.
    • Inspect product deliveries for inconsistencies with purchase orders, missing or damaged product; Ensures invoices are accurately submitted.
    • Co-ordinate bi-yearly inventory counts, frequent cycle counts of selected products, process inventory transfers, and special orders, tracking shrinkage and offering plans to curtail future product loss.
    • Tracks deliveries from Consignment Vendors. Reconcile and submit for manager’s approval Consignment vendors’ Quarterly Sales Statement.
  2. Customer and Vendor Relations

    • Cultivating deeper relationships with vendors including collaboratively developing merchandising product supports, coordinating onsite demos/book signings/workshops for the public and organizing product training for Evergreen Garden Market staff in order to increase product knowledge and sales.
    • Develop relationship with vendors, high profile customers, including private individuals, institutions, and internal customers to a point where discussion about donations and/or sponsorship opportunities with Evergreen are possible.
  3. Collaborate with the EGM team to maximize sales through a clear product merchandising plan. Developing and deploying merchandising product support including signage, display windows, etc.
  4. Sales and Customer Service

    • Provide friendly and enthusiastic customer service to guests.
    • Respond in a timely fashion to messages left on both store phone line and garden market email box.

Reporting Relationships:

  • Supervised by: Associate Manager
  • Supervises: Volunteers


  • Three (3) years of retail experience
  • Strong computer skills required (ie. Excel, Outlook, Word); familiarity with inventory control software preferred

Working conditions:

  • 32 to 40 hours per week, weekend work, and some evening work.

Physical requirements:

  • Standing for extended periods of time
  • Lifting heavy objects on a regular basis
  • Doing repetitive tasks with few breaks, etc.
