RESEARCH ASSISTANTS

Positions: Research Assistant

An independent PhD candidate is conducting research into the factors and indicators that impact sustainable livelihoods amongst indigenous communities, through a comparative study of rural indigenous communities in South Africa and Canada. Through this study, 20 interviews will be conducted with individuals that either live or have lived within an indigenous community within South Africa and Canada.

Currently seeking a part-time, temporary contract, Research Assistant in Canada that has experience either working or living within an indigenous community to identify potential participants, facilitate/conduct interviews with these participants, and be conscious of ethical practices to ensure respectful engagement.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Scheduling, conducting, and recording qualitative interviews.
  • Take part in training for qualitative interviews.
  • Verifying accuracy of interview transcriptions.
  • Ability to apply a social theory and sustainability framework during interview discussions.
  • Attend weekly meetings.
  • Ability to work remotely and access to an internet connection is essential.
  • Must have firsthand experience working with or living in a rural indigenous community in Canada.

Qualifications:

  • Good computer skills, particularly word processing and ZOOM.
  • Excellent communication (verbal/written in English) and interpersonal skills are necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload.
  • Able to keep written records, consent forms, and photographic evidence of community infrastructure.

This position would be ideal for a current student or recent grad that is interested in gaining experience within the research sector and enhance their data collection skills.

Wage will be hourly, at $20/hr for approximately 5 hour/week commitment. Assignment for this post will end once the project is completed.

There are 2 positions open, but will consider a single candidate for both positions if they can engage different rural indigenous communities within Canada. This project requires for 10 participants within each community.
