Position: Vancouver Program Manager

Swim Drink Fish is a Canada-based organization that connects people with water. We help more than 3-million people discover the importance of nature in their lives and provide them with the knowledge and tools they need to safeguard swimmable, drinkable, fishable water. Fraser Riverkeeper is our flagship initiative in British Columbia.

As the Vancouver Program Manager, your mission is to coordinate the three core projects operating in British Columbia. The Vancouver Water Quality Monitoring Hub tests recreational waters like False Creek and publishes the results to our Swim Guide platform. The Swim Drink Fish Gala takes place in Vancouver every 18-months and is the organization’s most important fundraising and community-building initiative in the region. Outreach and Engagement activities engage water users, government, funders, and other stakeholders in the work that needs to be done to connect people to water and restore swimmable, drinkable, fishable waters for everyone.

This is an incredible opportunity for someone with excellent organizational skills, the ability to lead and inspire team members, and a deep love of water and community.

This is a full-time position with a flexible start date in August - September 2019. Benefits include two weeks paid vacation and health benefits after the first year. The position is based in Vancouver with occasional travel within the Fraser River watershed.


  • Project management of the three core projects described above, including project planning, ensuring deadlines are met and goals are achieved, financial tracking and reporting.
  • Manage a team of two full-time staff members, summer interns, and occasional contractors.
  • Recruit and onboard new staff and interns as needed.
  • Represent Swim Drink Fish at public events and meetings and effectively communicate the importance of our work, our research and fieldwork findings, and our recommendations for restoring and protecting swimmable, drinkable, fishable water.
  • Deliver presentations to community members and stakeholders to help build a community of people working for swimmable, drinkable, fishable water.
  • Coordinate community events that help promote the project goals and engage the public.
  • Ensure project communications are consistent with the project goals and contribute website articles or email messages when appropriate.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with grantmakers, sponsors, and individual donors.
  • Maintain donor and volunteer database.
  • Maintain regular and effective communications with Swim Drink Fish staff in Edmonton and Toronto.
  • Ensure digital files are organized and maintained for easy access by the team.


Mandatory Qualifications

  • Leadership skills and a self-starter or entrepreneurial mentality
  • Project management experience
  • Basic financial management and reporting experience (e.g., review of expenses, preparing project budgets)
  • Donor, stakeholder, or community engagement experience
  • Comfortable speaking in public and networking
  • Strong writing and/or editing skills
  • Knowledge of water issues, recreational watersports, BC environment, or similar topics
  • A willingness to spend time on the water and deepen your own water literacy
  • Event planning and coordination experience
  • A degree or work experience in environmental sciences, biology, sustainability, marketing, communications, education, public relations, or a related discipline. This position is interdisciplinary in nature and a demonstrated interest in science communications, whether derived from a science or arts background is key.
  • A valid driver’s licence and reliable access to a vehicle

  • Media relations experience
  • Volunteer management experience
  • Basic design skills, including use of Adobe Creative Suite or similar software
  • Ability to create presentations, workshops, educational materials
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and effective engagement strategies
  • The ability to prioritize tasks quickly

Swim Guide has been expanding rapidly to include 7,000 beaches all over Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Bahamas, Australia, and New Zealand. We count nearly 2 million individual users.

Fraser Riverkeeper, a partner of Swim Drink Fish, is a registered charity established in 2004. Fraser Riverkeeper was the first organization to pilot Swim Guide in 2011.
