Position: Property and Construction Manager
Type: summer job / summer student position

Headwaters Community Farm and Education Centre is a unique combination of organic agriculture and agro-tourism. Our aim is threefold: to feed our family and workers fresh, whole, nutritious foods; to use sustainable methods of farming and living to protect our beautiful environment; and to open our farm to outside visitors to share in our bounty and to educate them about healthy eating, ecological farming practices and homesteading skills. This is an important year for us as we are formally launching our education programming and bringing on board a number of staff to help us do it!

Headwaters is a 120-acre, mixed-use farm that is in a constant state of rejuvenation and repair. Regularly, we are building fences and gates, fixing doors and windows, replacing rain gutters, re-wiring and patching holes. We also do a lot of new construction related to our farm work, permaculture gardening and tourism activities such as building chicken tractors, water containment structures, outhouses, seating areas, signage, displays and landscaping. Our workshop is equipped with most hand and power tools needed to get the job done so all equipment has to be well-organized and accessible.

Duties would include:

  • Responsibility for overseeing projects, working with landowner to identify priorities, observing needs and creating solutions.
  • Property and landscape repair and maintenance, forestry, security, carpentry, painting, road maintenance, light electrical work.
  • Working with landowner to repair and schedule basic maintenance of farm vehicles, mowers, power tools, and other equipment.
  • Vegetation control, pasture maintenance, building and repair of fences as well as other smaller scale projects.

Skills needed:

  • Building repair, carpentry, experience with all forms of hand and power tools including saws (skill, chain, circular, jig), basic electrical and plumbing, fencing, moving stone and earth.
  • Basic vehicle maintenace. Knowledge of tractor mechanics an asset. Previous experience driving a tractor or another vehicle with a bucket.
  • Well-organized and flexible. Able to work independently and with a team. Comfortable with managing the public.
  • Comfortable working around farm animals.
  • Other qualifications:
  • Candidate must be strong, healthy and willing to work outdoors in all types of weather
  • Must have driver's licence
  • Knowledge of sustainable living and green practices an asset

This position is only available to full-time post-secondary students who are returning to school next year. Employment is for 16 weeks from May 8 to August 27 (negotiable). The workweek is from Tuesday to Saturday.

Wage is $11.40 an hour, 40 hours a week. Lunch provided.

Preference will be given to a local student. Otherwise, room and board is possible for a fee.
