Position: Director, Projects & Research
Organization: QUEST

We are seeking a full-time Director, Projects & Research to provide operational support for QUEST’s Smart Energy market activities including the development and delivery of projects, research, and advisory services.

Position Overview

Putting QUEST’s vision of Canada as a nation of Smart Energy Communities at the centre of everything we do, it is the role of the Director, Projects & Research to support the management and development of project, research, and advisory service opportunities to accelerate the growth of Smart Energy Communities in Canada. Primary responsibilities include the development and assisting in delivery of projects, research, and advisory services; business and proposal development, and team management and development.

Reporting to the Managing Director (the “Supervisor”), the Director, Projects & Research will be expected to work with and support all QUEST areas of practice to ensure the efficient delivery of projects, research, and advisory services; respond to the diverse needs of QUEST organizing bodies; and maintain a high level of professionalism towards funders, volunteers, clients, Subscribers, and partners.

The ideal candidate is fully bilingual in French and English, has experience managing complex multi-year, multi-sectoral initiatives with budgets >$1,000,000, managing remote teams, and knowledge about the Canadian energy landscape.

Functions and Responsibilities

The Director, Projects & Research is expected to undertake the following functions and responsibilities, as well as other functions and responsibilities as requested by their Supervisor:

1. Business Development and Implementation

  • Collaborate with senior management team, staff, and partners to identify and develop business opportunities that leverage QUEST’s existing research, tools, working groups, and advocacy efforts while responding to new opportunities.
  • Prepare proposals and develop and implement strategies to market QUEST’s services.
  • Maintain effective communication and engagement of Subscribers, clients, and other participants to support the operation of QUEST project, research, and advisory service activities.
  • In conjunction with the senior management team, be accountable for securing funds to operate on a yearly basis, and developing and implementing a sustainable revenue strategy for the long term.
  • Carry out assigned tasks including research, business cases, reports, presentations, workshop and/or service delivery, writing, review, and editing of associated documents, and other activities as required.

2. Management

  • Take an active role in the senior management team to ensure proper management of the organization and an integrated team approach, including strategic planning and business planning.
  • Support a success-oriented, goal-driven, communicative, and collaborative environment within the organization including enhancing the organization's culture and core values.
  • Responsible for ensuring that staff, volunteers, students, consultants and agencies under your direct responsibility are well managed and supervised. This includes the effective organization and assignment of work, assigned budgets, administration of agreements, contracts, memorandums of understanding, terms of reference and personnel policies.
  • Monitor and continuously improve operational processes and procedures to ensure attainment of yearly business plan revenue targets, milestones, and deliverables for project, research, and advisory services programming, and ensure all internal and external reporting requirements are met in a timely manner. Manage and provide leadership on the effective use of QUEST’s project management system (Wrike).

3. Relationship Management

  • Serve as an ambassador for QUEST, building appropriate relationships for the positive benefit of the organization, attend conferences and events, and participate in external committees/bodies as directed.
  • Responsible for ensuring that assigned project, research and advisory services staff, volunteers, students, consultants, senior associates and agencies assigned to you are well supervised. This includes the effective organization and assignment of work, and administration of agreements, contracts, memorandums of understanding, terms of reference and personnel policies.
  • Keep updated and use QUEST’s customer relationship management system (Solve) for all relationship management and coordination.
  • Curate and share contacts, reports, policies, and publications relevant to project and Subscriber markets with relevant internal and external stakeholders.

Experience and Skills

  • Degree in business (MBA), urban planning, environmental studies, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Management of teams (5+ years experience managing remote teams undertaking project delivery and applied research is preferred)
  • Program and project budget management (>$1,000,000)
  • Experience project managing complex multi-year, multi-sectoral initiatives (PMP designation preferred)
  • Comfortable working independently
  • Designing effective work-flow programs

Ability to travel within Canada.


This is a full-time position. The salary range is $75,000 – $85,000. Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
