The Career Foundation is currently seeking a part-time Box Tree Moth Scout on behalf of Landscape Ontario, the province’s premier horticultural trades association. The Box Tree Moth Scout position is intended to support Landscape Ontario’s Box Tree Moth management program. Box Tree Moth was first discovered in North America in Etobicoke in November 2018. This is an invasive pest, which completes its life cycle on Buxus species of plants.

Under the supervision of Landscape Ontario the Box Tree Moth Scout will work with staff and volunteers from Landscape Ontario to identify homes in the affected neighbourhoods that have Box Tree Moth in their boxwood shrubs and get permission from the homeowners to allow Landscape Ontario to monitor and spray for Box Tree Moth throughout the summer.

Elimination of this pest will ensure that it does not spread to farms that grow boxwood or to other areas of North America. The Box Tree Moth Scout will play a very important role in the eradication plan by identifying homes with the Box Tree Moth.

What's in it for you?

  • Salary is $17 per hour
  • Hours are Monday – Friday 4 pm – 8 pm and Saturday 10 am to 5 pm
  • Training is provided

  • Walking from house to house in the affected area when people are home (evenings and on the weekend) to identify yards with boxwood. Street by street directions will be provided.

  • If signs of Box Tree Moth are discovered, request signed permission from homeowner to have Landscape Ontario arrange for a professional landscape company to spray with a biological control product throughout the summer.
  • Identify addresses where signs of Box Tree Moth end to help identify the boundary where the moth has spread.
