Wildwood Ecoforest Naturalist

Position: Naturalist, part-time
Organization: Ecoforestry Institute Society
Location: Ladysmith, BC (near Duncan, Nanaimo)

The Ecoforestry Institute Society is seeking a part-time naturalist to lead place-based school programs, workshops and public programs at Wildwood Ecoforest, in Yellow Point, near Ladysmith, Vancouver Island, BC. The successful candidate will work closely with the board and members of the Ecoforestry Institute Society [] and, in particular, the EIS Education Committee, to connect people with nature and run interpretive ecoforestry and ecology based programs in an ecologically managed Coastal Douglas-fir forest.

Position will run from March-September (6 months); 10 hours a week. Wage: $18.50/hr

Duties include:

  • Delivery of school programs and public programs
  • Program prep/clean up and maintenance of program supplies
  • Communicate regularly with EIS Education Committee
  • Represent EIS at outreach events
  • Assist in program development and program evaluation
  • Track/record program stats
  • Liaise with teachers, volunteer nature guides, community organizations, members of the public and other stakeholders
  • Assist with EIS events and workshops
  • Other duties as needed

Experience and Qualifications:

  • 2 years post secondary or a combination of education and experience
  • A minimum of 6 months experience working as an interpreter/park naturalist or similar position
  • Passion for nature and connecting people with the natural world
  • Good working knowledge of botany and wildlife native to Vancouver Island
  • Able to work from a home office when not delivering programs
  • Fluent in MS Office suite
  • Highly organized, creative, self-starter with strong attention to detail who can work well independently and in a team environment
  • Able to take initiative and problem solve effectively
  • Experience delivering engaging, informative, inspiring information to public and school audiences using interpretive techniques
  • Experience communicating with the public in a professional manner
  • Willing and able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and terrains
  • Willing and able to work shift work with a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends
  • Physically fit and able to stand and walk for long periods of time
  • Willing and able to work in an isolated location
  • Must have own transportation to and from work
  • Must submit a valid criminal record check as a condition of employment
  • Knowledge of ecoforestry or forestry practices will be considered an asset
  • Experience working or volunteering in a non-profit setting will be considered an asset
