Position: Stewardship and Communication Intern
Organization: South East Alberta Watershed Alliance
Location: Medicine Hat, Alberta

Job Description

The Stewardship and Communication Intern works with SEAWA staff, contractors, and volunteers on SEAWA’s ongoing riparian areas restoration projects, applied research, and communication, education and outreach activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Executive Director, works with other SEAWA staff and perform the following tasks:

  • Fieldwork tasks including but not limited to the following: organize and haul supplies, tools, and materials; plant shrubs/ trees and do post-planting care (dig plant holes, plant, water, weed, apply mulch, make basins around base of plants, install plant protection cages); purchase tools, supplies, and materials; drive to and from restoration sites, clean and organize items in the self-storage unit and the office storage.
  • Document restoration activities and enter information on SEAWA’s filing system (photos, data collection, expenses, GPS locations, make maps, write reports, etc.)
  • Assist volunteers in the field.
  • Assist in all field visits check-out potential restoration sites.
  • Assist in applied research work and data collection; and citizen science data collection as they arise.

  • Assist in the holding of SEAWA events: educational forums, open houses, and tours.
  • Participate on behalf of SEAWA at community events.
  • Assist in the holding of committee meetings and take notes.
  • Document all activities, write articles about activities or any relevant topic for the SEAWA newsletter.
  • Administrative and office tasks, and any other task assigned by the Executive Director.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Completion of high school or post-secondary education
  • Interested in biology, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and growing native shrubs and trees
  • Ability to do manual field work and some lifting work.
  • Experience in the use of manual gardening and tree/shrub planting tools (e.g., shovel, spade, shears, loppers) and other basic tools (e.g., pliers, screwdriver, mallet, small sledgehammer, etc.)
  • Basic understanding of plant growth requirements in a semi-arid climate such as Southeastern Alberta
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Suite – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Basic GIS skills
  • Ability to learn website editing and posting
  • Excellent English communication skills – spoken and written
  • Collaborative and cooperative attitude, respectful, positive and cheerful disposition, and interested in listening to people, having discussion and sharing of relevant knowledge.
  • A strong work ethic: punctual, respectful, follows schedules, follows instructions (work and safety practices), and meets deadlines and deliverables
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle to travel to work sites
  • Able to work alone and a part of a team
  • Ability to work in a small urban centre such as Medicine Hat.

Position Details

  • A full-time position starting August 15, 2022 to December 31, 2022 with a possibility of extension to March 31, 2023 depending on performance.
  • Must be between 18-30 years old.
  • Wage is $18 - $20 per hour depending on qualifications + vacation pay, 7 hours per day, 5 days a week.
  • Work is approximately 50-90% field work and 10-50% office work depending on the progress of the seasons. There is no virtual work.
  • The position is at Medicine Hat, AB
  • This position reports to the Executive Director
  • A Police Check and a valid AB driver's license are required and
  • Legally allowed to work in Canada.
