Job Title: Manager of Camping & Outdoor Education
Organization: YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka

PAY BAND: 4 (Starting rate of $45,000-$50,000 depending on experience)



The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka currently serves over 125,000 people in Simcoe County and the Districts of Muskoka and Parry Sound in Central Ontario. The YMCA is one of the largest charities within our service area, providing over $1.1 million annually of support and access to our programs and services.

With a staff complement of 1200+ full and part-time staff, combined with over 1,000 volunteers and donors, and an operating budget of $39 million, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka serves over 30,000 annual members and participants through its eight membership centres in Barrie, Collingwood, Gravenhurst, Innisfil, Midland, Orillia, Parry Sound, and Wasaga Beach; 3,000 Child Care families across a number of communities; registers 4,000 day campers in addition to 800 overnight campers at YMCA Camp Kitchikewana on Beausoleil Island; over 15,000 people through leadership development, outdoor education and family programs at YMCA Geneva Park; and counsels over 20,000 people in several community development programs.

Reporting to the General Manager, the Manager of Camping and Outdoor Education is responsible for the operation and development of camping and outdoor education programs at YMCA Geneva Park. This includes programming for summer family camp with over 500 families as well as vacation guests, an overnight summer leadership program (GP Leap) for 15-17 year olds, as well as programming with year-round outdoor education, leadership and conference groups. The Manager supervises a full-time Assistant Manager as well as a seasonal program staff team of up to 50 staff during the summer months. The role includes, but is not limited to the development of safe, values-based programs that build assets in children, youth and families, the hiring and development of program staff and delivery of all aspects of the program.


  • Demonstrate strong support and commitment to the mission and core values of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka and the YMCA in Canada.
  • Demonstrate strong support and commitment to serving the membership, facility users and all program participants of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka.
  • Ensure that the day-to-day Family Camp and Leadership Programming during June, July and August is safe, age-appropriate and rooted in the YMCA’s Core Values.
  • Program, staff and facilitate year round family programs, outdoor education programs, teambuilding and leadership needs at YMCA Geneva Park.
  • Develop new program opportunities at YMCA Geneva Park throughout the year
  • Hire, train and manage a staff team of over 50 young adults.
  • In cooperation with the General Manager, ensure that communications with the Family Camp Community are professional and foster a sense of commitment to the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka.
  • Effectively schedule programs in coordination with conference and day camp teams.
  • May include helping to coordinate programs at our other camping sites and/or travel to camping booths and schools to promote program.
  • Adherence to all provincial and federal legislation relevant to job description.
  • Other related duties as required.


  • Post-secondary education in recreation, education or other related field
  • Strong public relations, marketing and communications skills
  • Quality service training and experience
  • Understanding of all relevant standards and legislation regarding the safe and appropriate operation of an outdoor centre and camp program including OCA, OPHEA and YMCA CQRP.
  • Strong work ethic with administrative skills
  • Standard First Aid with CPR C/AED certification
  • Have access to a car and have a valid G or higher level of driver’s license
  • Prior camping, outdoor education and/or recreational experience as a supervisor
  • Excellent team player able to work closely and share leadership with other staff
  • Child Protection orientation
  • AODA training
  • Health & Safety Awareness training
  • Violence & Harassment in the Workplace training
  • PCI Compliance
  • Must be able to work flexible hours based on client needs
  • Clear Police Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Mandated training is required before or shortly after commencement of work
