Position: Instructor/Nature Mentor for 4-6 year-olds
Organization: Soaring Eagle Nature School
Location: Vancouver & North Vancouver, BC

Soaring Eagle Nature School is seeking an Instructor/ Nature Mentor to join our team to offer unique programs for kids aged 4-6 in the beautiful forests of Vancouver and North Vancouver. This is an opportunity to share your gifts with kids through nature-based mentoring and passion-based learning. Soaring Eagle Nature School is seeking an Instructor/Nature Mentor for part-time work (18-27 hours/week) starting September 2021. The ideal candidate will be available for shadowing at week-long summer camps this summer. Please indicate in your application if you are available for summer camp (start this summer) or a fall start (Sept 7.)

Our mission at Soaring Eagle Nature School is to empower people to discover and share their gifts through meaningful connections with the natural world. We honour the natural cycles within people and use their own excitement and curiosity to guide their learning and their connections to themselves, the earth and other people.

You should be passionate about working with children aged 4-6 in a non-coercive and supportive way, and incorporating the natural world into fun-filled days entirely outdoors. Soaring Eagle Nature School is known for a playful approach, and a ratio of 6 kids for every 1 adult means the opportunity to mentor kids closely. We are looking for committed and resourceful individuals to become a part of our team of instructors/nature mentors.

This is a chance to be a part of a school that comes from the lineage of the Wilderness Awareness School and the 8-Shields Model. You will be immersed in a mentoring model that can be applied to any school or organization. You will gain skills and experience from paid training sessions and experience within a dedicated team working with amazing kids in beautiful parks.

Responsibilities would include and are not limited to:

  • Part-time Instructor for Young Sprouts program, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Should you like, the position may extend to additional programs such as monthly, weekend programs, as well as contract programs and school group programs.
  • Development and implementation of age-specific and developmentally appropriate nature-connected programming for youth (aged 4-6)
  • Passion and knowledge about some of the following: survival skills, wildlife tracking and animal ID, edible and medicinal plants, navigation, forest ecology etc. Being an expert on these topics already is great but not necessary, you can also study while you work and grow your knowledge.
  • Developing fun, hands-on projects for 4-6 yr olds
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with students, parents and other staff
  • Maintain all relevant paperwork and administrative support for programs
  • Running programs rain or shine - comfortable outside no matter the weather

The ideal candidate will demonstrate familiarity and understanding of the following:

  • Desire to use your gifts to help guide people into a closer connection with the natural world
  • Naturalist skills, earth-based living skills/ancestral skills and a desire to keep learning these
  • Experience working with children and youth aged 4-6
  • Excellent group facilitation skills
  • Understanding and practice of effective, clear and compassionate communication skills
  • Comfort in handling student and family affairs in a competent, open and professional way
  • Creative and crafty with a love of making cool things with your hands out of natural materials
  • Exercise a healthy sense of humour

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years experience in nature-based mentoring with children
  • Standard First Aid and CPR C (will be required by date of hire)
  • Clear Criminal Record Check (will be required by date of hire)

Bonus points! The following are preferred but are not required. Please send in your application even if these don’t apply to you:

  • Graduate of the Anake Program, Regenerative Design and Nature Awareness (RDNA) Program, Graduate of the Kamana Naturalist Program, or similar program
  • Familiarity and experience with Coyote Mentoring/ 8 shields model (developed by Jon Young and Wilderness Awareness School)
  • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in education or environmental degree
  • Expertise in Child Development and Neufeld Attachment
  • Access to a vehicle
  • Wilderness First Aid

Schedule:

Mandatory training: September 7 - 10, 2021.

Young Sprouts runs 9:30 am - 2:30pm on Mondays (North Vancouver), Wednesdays (North Vancouver) and Thursdays (Vancouver) Additional hours are available.

If you are able to start in the summer to shadow for a week or two, camps run Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 2:00 pm.

Ongoing Instructors work at least 1 week of Spring Break Camp and 5 weeks of Summer Camp when regular programs are not in session

Compensation:

  • Starting wage $20-$23/hr based on experience and availability.
  • 4% Vacation Pay
  • 1 week paid training. (Mandatory attendance Sept 7-10)
  • Paid training & professional development sessions throughout the year
  • Health & Dental benefits through Pacific Blue Cross (50% of Monthly premium covered) for staff working in year-long programs who work a minimum 20 hours/week
  • Discount for educational workshops and outdoor gear for long term staff
  • Paid bi-weekly
