Position: Equipment Manager

Duration: 6-week and 10-week contracts available
Hours: Monday - Friday, 8 hour shifts between 8am - 6pm, plus additional hours as required

The p.i.n.e. project fosters confidence, competence, resilience and connection to nature through transformative outdoor experiences for all ages in Toronto and beyond. Our work inspires a vital re-connection between people and nature, community and oneself. We work primarily with children and families in the urban context, delivering innovative year-round outdoor programming. Our programs include weekly programming for children during the school year, overnight camps in South Central Ontario, as well as highly sought-after day camps in Toronto. You will be employed in the position of Summer Camp Equipment Manager. Your work location may be: Etienne Brule Park, King’s Mill Park, Taylor Creek Park, Bark Lake Leadership Camp in Haliburton, or other.

Position Summary:

The p.i.n.e. project is seeking an Equipment Manager for our Summer Day Camps in Toronto. If you’re passionate about the outdoors and working with children, and you are looking for a fulfilling outdoor job in the urban wilderness of Toronto, this position may be ideal for you! The Equipment Manager position has key responsibilities related to organizing equipment and vehicles to support our day camps. Time is spent between our office location and our camps in the parks of Toronto.

You’ll receive excellent training in nature connection and inquiry-based learning from our highly-skilled Camp Managers, and learn about the relationship between the office and field in an organization operating outdoor programming in the urban context. In the words of a past staff member:

Your duties will include:

  • Pre camp gear purchasing, organizing, and creating inventory

  • Ensuring all camp gear and equipment is labelled, well stocked, and in good working order before and during camps;

  • Daily upkeep of company vehicles, reporting if any maintenance is required;

  • Maintenance and organization of camp equipment, use of storage systems and inventory tracking, and development of new systems as required;

  • Order, purchase and repair equipment if necessary;

  • Manage check-out and check-in of gear and equipment;

  • Perform errands during camp when necessary;

  • Assist with wellness coordinator responsibilities when required;

  • Coordinate with Camp Managers on day to day basis

  • Support delivery of camps in other ways as required.

  • Support After Care if/when required

  • Be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Provide cover for absent staff as required.

  • Other duties as needed

Driving duties:

  • Arrive on time to the p.i.n.e. project office to collect the vehicle and all required program equipment;

  • Follow all p.i.n.e. project driving procedures and protocols;

  • Drive the vehicle to and from the program location;

  • Secure the vehicle and p.i.n.e. project equipment it contains;

  • Report any issues or concerns with the vehicle to the Executive Director;

  • Maintain valid driver’s license.

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Up to date Police Vulnerable Sectors Check

  • Up to date Standard First Aid and CPR-C or higher

  • Valid Class G Driver’s License

Staff must:

  • Be enthusiastic, outgoing, and flexible

  • Have experience working with children

  • Be able and willing to work as part of a team

  • Have good communication, time management, and organizational skills

  • Identify with p.i.n.e.'s mission statement and core values

  • Have a desire to further their own naturalist/wilderness skills, mentoring techniques, and/or nature connection through professional development opportunities with p.i.n.e. staff members

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the following areas:

  • Working in camp settings

  • Outdoor and environmental education

  • Naturalist experience and knowledge

  • Survival skills, wilderness experience
