Position: Vegetable Farm Manager
Type: full-time (room and board are available on farm if needed, cost to be negotiated)
Start date: Jan 1 — full-time, year-round position

north of Courtenay, Vancouver Island BC

Amara Farm is a certified organic vegetable and blueberry farm located north of Courtenay, BC. We are a founding member of Merville Organics Growers Cooperative and sell through a 150-share CSA, 3 farmers markets, and a dozen wholesale accounts. We are looking for a vegetable farm manager to:


  • Plan, grow and harvest ~$75,000 of mixed organic annual vegetables
  • Maintain annual production fields through weeding, soil management, crop rotation, pest control and other techniques to ensure the long-term productivity of Amara Farm
  • Manage a 2 intern crew and supervise WWOOFers/volunteers
  • Maintain records of seeding, pest management, soil amendments, and sales for Organic Certification Inspection
  • Create and maintain crop plan, budgets, and other records to ensure annual production meets the farm's financial needs
  • Maintain hand tools and other equipment used for annual vegetable production
  • Interaction with marketing coop to ensure appropriate amounts of produce are grown and harvested each week to maximize sales
  • Provide weekly lessons to interns that covers the theoretical side of organic farming
  • Ensure on-farm housing is clean, maintained, and in good working order

The Farm Manager (FM) at Amara Farm is responsible for the planning, growing, and harvesting all the annual production on the farm. Amara Farm is Certified Organic and the farm manager must have a working understanding of how to grow food and document their actions to comply with Organic Standards. The Farm's annual production currently occupies approximately two acres of the farm and includes multiple field production areas, four stationary hoophouses, and two moveable hoophouses. The farm aims to produce food year-round as much as possible so the FM should have familiarity with winter crop production. The FM is responsible for managing a crew of two interns and occasional WWOOFers/volunteers to carry out weekly tasks like bed prep, weeding, seeding, harvest, and irrigation. In addition, the FM works with the farm owners to provide weekly lessons for the intern crew to ensure they have a well-rounded education of how to grow organic produce.


  • 2-5 years full time production farm management experience
  • Comfort and experience with spreadsheets, especially Google sheets
  • Good interpersonal, communication, and supervisory skills
  • Knowledge of BSC machinery, Jang Seeder, and Quick Greens harvester operation and maintenance
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Sense of humor

Hours: The FM works Monday-Friday, 9am to 4pm (hours can change in the heat of summer but ~ 35 hours per week)

Compensation is $36,000 per year and could include an incentive program. Room and board are available on farm if needed, cost to be negotiated.
