Position: Farm Intern
Type: full-time internship with accom., board and stipend (see below)
Organization: Fair Fields CSA
Location: Neustadt, north of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario

For 2018, Fair Fields CSA will be offering a full season internship (mid-April through mid-October) for and individual or couple.

Fair Fields CSA is a family run market garden operation located on a beautiful 100 acre farm near Neustadt, ON. In our sixth year of operation, we will be growing a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and a few small fruits organically (not certified) for a 75-90 member summer CSA. Though not a part of our CSA operation we have two beehives and will continue planting a home orchard this spring.

Through a variety of opportunities you will gain experience in:

  • Small diversified vegetable production system
  • Some perennial crops including strawberries and raspberries
  • Greenhouse production
  • Introductory beekeeping

You will work as part of a team alongside the farmer and volunteers on a daily basis learning about all aspects of the farming operation. More specifically you will learn about:

  • Business planning and marketing
  • Crop planning, including cover cropping
  • Transplant production, planting and seeding
  • Tractor operation, including field cultivation and basic loader work
  • Organic weed and pest control
  • Harvest and post-harvest handling
  • Basic equipment maintenance and repair

Fair Fields CSA is still expanding and scaling up so you will also have the opportunity to help build and setup new infrastructure including renovating a drive shed to make room for draft horses and pigs, fencing pastures and modifying our irrigation system.

In addition to the education you will be provided with in-house accommodation, board and a stipend, to be determined based on experience. Fair Fields CSA is situated in a tight community (spatially and socially) of organic and biodynamic farms so there are also off-farm opportunities for learning and socializing.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is inquisitive, hard-working and self-motivated
  • Has a desire to explore a career in farming
  • Works well independently and as part of a team, and
  • Is organized, tidy and a good communicator

The work week will be 5-6 days of 8-10 hours depending on the time of year and work that needs finishing. We aim to be reasonable and will have shorter days and weeks at points in the season, but will need to have flexibility at other points so as to finish certain tasks in a timely fashion.

If interested please email me your resume to and briefly tell me about your interest in the internship. I will call you to set up a a more formal interview if we seem like a good fit.
