Position: Gardener
Organization: Riverdale Hub
Location: Greenwood & Gerrard, Toronto, Ontario

Riverdale Hub is a social enterprise in Toronto’s East End that houses the Social Gardener Café, Riverdale Gallery, co-working and event spaces, and a rooftop garden. Be a part of an organization that promotes inclusivity, sustainability and community through our many programs and practices.

Position Summary:

The Gardener not only shares our values, but is creative, versatile, and passionate about sustainability, organic gardening, food security and community. The position will require the incumbent to tend to the rooftop organic vegetable garden, rain water garden, and indoor plants. We also host a digital program called Women in the Garden (WIG) for women to learn about gardening. This position may require collaboration with the WIG Program Coordinator to plan digital workshops and garden themed activities.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the container gardens on the rooftop to grow seasonal vegetables, herbs, edible flowers, and pollinator friendly plants.
  • Create and execute on seasonal garden plans and activities (e.g., designing, planning, seedling preparation, planting, harvesting, soil amendments, pest management, weeding, tilling, watering, composting, seed saving, sanitization of tools, pots, etc.).
  • Source, stock and maintain inventory of all garden supplies and inputs.
  • Provide direction to community garden volunteers.
  • Ensure tidiness and organization of greenhouse and all materials.

General:

  • Ensure all COVID-19 safety and disinfecting standards and procedures are followed.
  • Provide blurb for monthly newsletter on garden activities.
  • Assist in marketing and social media activities to promote the garden.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of organic, urban, and community gardening experience.
  • Expertise in permaculture preferred.
  • Horticulture or sustainable urban agriculture certificate or diploma.
  • Motivation to follow through on projects and bring forward new ideas to advance the garden.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, as well as independently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Social media skills are an asset.
  • Strong computer (MS Office and G-Suite) skills.

Hours of Work: 25 hours/week; asap to October

Salary: $20/hour
