Position: Organic Value Chains Coordinator
Organization: The Organic Council of Ontario
Location: anywhere in Ontario – preference for Guelph and/or GTA, Ontario

Hours: 30 – 40 hours a week
Compensation: Salary $42,000-$55,000/year pro-rated

Benefits: OCO compensates staff for personal device use, internet and other small office expenses pending approval. After 6 months, staff may be offered a health savings plan.

Eligibility:

  • Participants must be age 30 and under and a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or hold refugee status in Canada;
  • Must be a graduate from a post-secondary institution (some exceptions apply) and is not an existing full-time permanent employee;
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations

OCO’s mandate is to support organic farmers and businesses to thrive. However, the value chains that bring organic food from farm to fork vary widely. The Organic Value Chains Coordinator will help OCO and the public to develop an understanding of the unique production methods within different value chains by conducting research, aggregating data, surveying organic members, reviewing the scientific literature and creating content to translate their findings. The intern will identify specific knowledge gaps and liaise with the Organic Science Cluster to shape potential value chain specific research projects (e.g. building fertility in an organic greenhouse). The Organic Value Chains Coordinator will be responsible for building relationships with agricultural commodity groups that represent these value chains to improve relationships and share resources.

Job Duty and Environmental Element of the job

  • Gather data on acreage and yields among particular organic value chains (e.g. grapes, greenhouse, grains);
  • Aggregate scientific literature and production information on the differences between conventional and organic farming, including the potential for environmental impact and reduction in emissions;
  • Create content and resource highlighting the production differences and highlight areas for improvement, further research to bring to the attention of the Organic Science Cluster and the Canadian Organic Standards working groups;
  • Conduct surveys and focus groups of organic members to understand their needs and triangulate data;
  • Create reports for agricultural commodity groups of the numbers, acreage, yields, revenues and potential market share of their organic members;
  • Propose potential partnerships with agriculture commodity groups to support shared projects and resources
