We are looking for 2 people to fill intern positions for the 2020 season.

  • 2 full time positions from April-November

Amara Farm is a certified organic farm located in Courtenay, BC on Vancouver Island. We grow approximately 30 varieties of annual vegetables on 1.25 acres, as well as blueberries, asparagus, currants and fruit trees. We utilize hoop houses for seedling propagation, vegetable production, and year-round growing. Amara sells their produce through local farmer’s markets, restaurants, and retailers.

At Amara, we aim to grow good quality nutritious food, provide an educational space for the next generation of farmers, and engage with the community. Amara works with various organizations to facilitate educational experiences, provide a space for research and development within the agricultural sector, and support local initiatives that champion regional food security.

The farm is quiet, but conveniently located a 30 minute bike ride or 10 minute drive to town. We are also located close to a large park with a great trail network and beach access. There are countless swimming holes and beaches in the area for after work dips, and wonderful hiking and biking access in the surrounding areas for exploring during days off.

Internship Overview

Interns work alongside the Farm Manager daily to complete all aspects of farm operations. Some of the tasks include: seeding, planting, weeding, harvesting, processing/packaging produce, record keeping, irrigating, and bed preparation. The Farm Manager will be present, but there will be times when interns will be expected to complete tasks on their own.

It is our hope that you leave this internship with the fundamental skills you needs to start your own farm enterprise. A lot of hands-on learning happens in the field; however, there will be opportunities to cover some basic farm theory and concepts. This includes crop planning, record keeping, soil basics, and more. These topics are open to be guided by interns’ interests. Interns will also have access to a small growing area, where they can plan and carry out their own growing projects.

On-farm accommodation is provided. The separate house includes a full kitchen, laundry facilities, shower/bath, woodstove, living room, wifi, and individual bedrooms. The house is a shared space for the interns and any other volunteers or guests who come to stay throughout the season. Vegetarian food is provided and there is access to the produce from the farm.
