INTERNSHIP POSITIONS

Position: Organic Farm Interns 2017
Type: full-time internship with accom., food, monthly stipend, more (see below)
Organization: Lunar Rhythm Gardens
Location: Janetville / Kawartha Lakes/Durham Region, Ontario (near Lindsay)

Lunar Rhythm Gardens is looking for several interns for the 2017 growing season. We prefer to have interns from April/May until the end of October, but are very open to having students or other interns who cannot commit to a full growing season.

Lunar Rhythm is a certified organic farm located in Janetville Ontario, 20 minutes south of Lindsay, 20 minutes east of Port Perry, 30 minutes west of Peterborough, and 1.5 hours east of Toronto. We are a family owned and operated farm located on a 100 acre plot. The land has been owned by David (father) for 30 years and he runs a cow/calf operation, while Jessica (daughter) has been operating her 10 acre organic garden on the land for over 5 years. We are a very diverse farm growing a large variety of fruits and vegetables, while also raising pigs, chickens, cattle, laying hens, and laying ducks. We also have 25+ bee hives on the property, as well as horses, ponies, dogs, cats and children.

We sell our produce to several wholesalers, restaurants, 2 weekly farmers markets, a 100+ member summer CSA, and a 30+ member winter CSA.

As an intern, you will be involved with the daily operation of the farm, including seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, going to markets, and any other farm related tasks. Farm work is always changing, and can be very physically demanding. If you have an interest in learning certain aspects of farming, we can arrange to have you focus on that aspect.

What sets Lunar Rhythm apart from other certified organic farms is our use of draft horses. We have a team of 3 work horses who are utilized to do a lot of the field work, including discing and cultivating. It is very important that as an intern you are comfortable around horses. You do not need to have any horse experience and we will not ask you to operate the team if you do not wish to, but having horse experience is definitely a plus.

Interns will reside on-farm in either a private trailer, shared trailer or a room in the farm house. All basic food needs will be provided, and hopefully sourced from the farm. For the 2016 season we had a live-in chef who prepared the majority of our meals.

Interns are expected to work from Monday to Saturday, from 7am until 5pm, with the exception of harvest days (Tuesday + Friday) which start at 6am. Due to the irregularity of farm work, these hours often run beyond the set schedule, but can also be shortened if the days tasks have been completed. Interns recieve a stipend of $400/month, and are given 1 week of vacation.
