Farmer for a Lakefront Holistic Retreat in Eastern Ontario

Position: Farmer
Farm: Holistic Retreat
Dates: mid-February to November 30, 2021

Location: north of Kingston, Ontario
Housing: off-the-grid cabin on a private lake, see below

Do you like the idea of getting up at the crack of dawn and greeting the glory of all the abundance you have created even while knowing that your To Do list is often longer than the hours in the day? Well then, you are the person we are looking for!

We are creating a holistic retreat north of Kingston, Ontario and need a Farmer(s) to build on the ¼ acre organic garden that we started this year. Our aim is to have a vegetable, herb and fruit garden to provide entire meals for the retreat participants who appreciate healthy, organic, farm fresh meals. We are also confident that, for the motivated and skilled farmer, there will be ample opportunity to grow more than what we will require so that it will be possible to take produce to the local market or start a CSA.

We are looking for a self starter — someone with a vision of creating and building a sustainable farming practice. You will be responsible for everything in building and managing this garden including tracking the financials. We have a range of equipment already and will add more as needed. We are prepared to invest in necessary start-up costs from irrigation supplies to fencing. We have plenty of arable land which has never been sprayed or contaminated and there is easy access to clean water.

You are welcome to apply the farming practices that best suit your skills and reflect your knowledge and experience including no-till, regenerative, permaculture, organic, biodynamic; the only proviso is that nothing may be used in your farming that is not permitted in the Canadian Organic Standards. Obviously, all Canadian health and safety guidelines will also be adhered to at all times. You are expected to have a minimum of two years of experience managing an organic or sustainable farm and references that make clear your ability to handle the range of skills required.

You will be responsible for managing any seasonal workers, looking after the administrative side of running the farm, monitoring budgets, and all the basics of crop planning, cultivation, harvesting schedules and post- harvest handling. At present we have a small herd of Scottish Highland cattle that are entirely grass fed so clean manure is readily available and we would be happy to see poultry added to the livestock plans. Moreover, you will be responsible for liaising with the retreat chef, procuring seeds and other supplies as needed.

We will offer on-site accommodation in a 3 season, 1 bedroom plus loft, off-the-grid cabin on a private lake — (enough room for a couple and 2 kids). We expect you to be on site from mid-February to November 30. Compensation will be $25,000 for this period and we are potentially interested, in evaluating an ongoing longer-term contract as the growing season progresses and we are better able to evaluate your suitability for the position.

Interested applicants will please send a letter of interest and resume with references to: by September 30, 2020.
