ORGANIC FARMING

Position: Organic Farm Manager
Type: paid employment or farm business/entrepreneur (see below)
Farm: Manitoulin Permaculture
Location: Little Current, Manitoulin Island, Ontario (housing options, see below)

Manitoulin Permaculture is looking for a motivated and experienced individual or couple to take the lead on guiding the growth and evolution our farm for the 2019 growing season and beyond (assuming a good mutual fit). The ideal candidate(s) have at least an intermediate level of organic gardening experience and embody proven leadership skills. The capacity to plan ahead, to organize work and lead others (mostly volunteers) is part of daily life at our place.

We are seven years in with many established and functional parts of the overall system in place with more infrastructure on the way. We have land, a steady stream of volunteers, most of the tools and equipment needed, we have greenhouses, we have access to water, fertility, and a tractor. We are missing the 'boots on the ground' leadership that is needed to operate at scale.

Manitoulin Permaculture functions as a seasonal community of environmentally and socially conscious individuals and couples. We have become an incubator of sorts for permaculture inspired businesses. Our success as an incubator is why we are now looking for new energy to join as farm lead. The people who have filled the farm lead roll for the past several years have started and are focused on growing their own businesses. Our stable number is typically around 10 but can spike up towards 20 at peak times. We accept guests, volunteers, and wwoofers from all around the world from May-October.

Compensation is negotiable based on level of experience and whichever structure suits both parties. You could be a paid employee or treat this as a venture where you are supported to build and run a farm based business. Self-directed candidates who embody an entrepreneurial spirit are best suited for this position.

Depending on your needs and preferences we offer a variety of housing options including dome-like huts, a large gazebo, large family-sized tents and an AirStream. All are reasonably private, waterproof, bugproof, with beds and bedding. Communally we share a 600 sqft building, a large outdoor kitchen, compost toilets, a solar powered outdoor shower, laundry, and sauna. Water is potable. Town is a 10 minute drive. Internet is reasonably fast and covers most of the property. Dinners are provided Monday - Saturday. Chores are shared communally. Electricity is a combination of off-grid and on-grid systems. The property fronts on Lake Huron with swimming spots close by. We have numerous bikes, kayaks, and a canoe.

We are an inclusive community and celebrate diversity. Our community is not vegetarian but does strive to source animal derived food as locally and ethically as possible. If the above sounds interesting to you and you would like to know more, please get in touch.
