Nature & Scope:

YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre is a year round operation, opened 7 days a week, which delivers outdoor education programs to school groups, youth and adult retreats, a day camp and an overnight camp focused on leadership development during the summer months. The centre also operates a 4 acres organic vegetable farm with Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs, Farm Camps, and farm stands.

Reporting to the Farm Team Leader, the Farm Worker (Operation) is responsible for following the farm plan, organizing and carrying out the day to day tasks related to farm operations with the key objective to optimize the organization efficiency of the farm (infrastructure). The position provides the highest customer service to Harvest Share members, Kitchen staff team, on-site and off-site farm stands.

Responsibilities:

  • With the support of the Farm Team Leader, plan, carryout, and continuously improve farm operations which includes coordination of the Harvest Share Program (communications with members and YMCA staff at pick up locations, deliveries), Kitchen Team relationship, on-site farm stand, and special events.
  • Supports and implement marketing strategies for all sales outlets for crops, honey, and maple syrup on the farm.
  • In collaboration with the Production Farm Worker, organizes Harvest Share harvests and pick-ups, sets up produce for onsite farm stands, and provides vegetables to the Kitchen Staff. Completes inventory of all produce sold and remaining to avoid food wastes.
  • Tracks and records all farm sales. Provides support to Farm Team Leader in monitoring and optimizing farm incomes.
  • Is accountable for customer interface of the farm, ongoing cleanness and visitor tour-readiness of the 4 acres, and organization of all spaces.
  • Imagine and trouble shoot farm system and use of available or potential infrastructure to ameliorate productivity and sales.
  • Lead crew of farm helpers (assistant farm workers, interns, volunteers, visitors, etc.) and supports farm production and education on a regular basis based on needs of the farm.
  • Proactively supports Farm Team Leader, Farm Workers, and other farm team members.
  • Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association. Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.
  • Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.
  • Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Formal or informal training in organic agriculture, horticulture, gardening, or a related field
  • Minimum of 2 full seasons in a leadership role of staff team and using practical skills for organic vegetable sales
  • Demonstrated leadership in providing superior customer service
  • Ability to build successful communication with the Farm Team Leader to ensure continuous and efficient production
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Routinely perform hard physical labour on a regular basis
  • Flexibility to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Must have valid driver’s license for Harvest Share deliveries
  • Must have a personal arrangement to commute to the farm. YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre is not accessible by public transit
  • Standard first aid and CPR
  • Ability to use frequent light to medium physical effort: lifting up to 20 kg (44 lbs.), bending and stooping
