Are you experienced in and passionate about organic farming?
Do you want to expand your experience in greenhouse crops and seedling production?
Are you an effective leader and motivator?
Wild Flight Farm is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and committed individual who is keen to start a career with us in organic farming specializing as the Greenhouse Manager (Lead). Main tasks will be hands-on operation of 13 poly tunnels used for hot-crops and season extension, implementing and tracking details involved in seedling production, post-harvest quality control, and instructing and directing staff. This opportunity is ideal for someone who is committed to the principles of organic farming practices, wants to learn from a well-established farm, and wants a stable career as the position can be extended to be year-round instead of seasonal. Position is dynamic, with transition from greenhouse duties during the growing season to packing for winter markets and assisting in project planning during the off-season.
Ideal applicants must have hands-on experience in organic vegetable production (preferably including greenhouse crops), strong interpersonal and supervisory skills, good communication skills, and a can-do attitude that is followed up by efficient work practices. Ideal, but not essential, attributes are experience running a walk-behind rototiller or BCS, on-farm management experience, and a post-secondary degree in horticulture/agriculture related program. Wage will start at $20-23 hourly, depending on past experience, with annual compensation reviews. Medical benefits are offered to leads who commit to working year-round, which is a huge plus as it covers medical, dental, vision, visits to registered alternative therapy practitioners ie massage(!).
We will have a wonderful crew of 6-8 folks with various work experience who will assist with greenhouse/field tasks, and a friendly and skilled management group made up of the farm owners and co-leads, all whom make up the farm team. Daily meetings with leadership team, where daily tasks and priorities are discussed, are where a positive, collaborative approach to problem solving is a must to balance the needs of the various farm departments. Training for the job will involve working closely with Louise (owner) to learn the details, and report mainly to the Farm Manager. We have a COVID plan in place which involves sanitization, social distancing, and wearing masks when close proximity cannot be avoided, among other measures.
We enjoy the scenic views and quietness of a rural setting, meaning there is also no available public transit. Applicants must have a driver’s license and mode of transportation, and live or relocate to be within 30-minute drive of the farm. If relocation is necessary, it is up to the successful applicant to source accommodation, although help can be offered if attempts are unsuccessful. Folks who are not currently residing in Canada will not be considered.
Medical benefits, a living wage, free and discounted produce, knowledgeable support, job security, flexibility, and proximity to the Shuswap River and outdoor recreation are some of the perks! Work week is around 40 hours Monday-Friday with occasional long days as required, but the weekend is left free to enjoy personal time. Friendships and comraderie among coworkers happens naturally, and is fostered by team-building activities like participating in Bike to Work Week, hosting occasional farm events, a summer staff party, and a season end staff party. We work hard, but we have fun too!
