Position: Field Supervisor on Certified Organic Farm
Type: seasonal full-time / optional on-site living
Organization: Wicklow Way Farm
Location: east of Cobourg/Grafton, Central Ontario

The Field Supervisor is responsible for the production of vegetables and fruits at Wicklow Way farm and readying such produce for farmers markets.

The Field Supervisor reports to and takes direction and guidance from the farm manager who is actively involved in the day-to-day farm operations. The farm team consists of 3-4 full time staff members plus the 2 farm owners. The Field Supervisor will lead the team in all duties required to grow, harvest and prepare fresh fruits and vegetables for market.

The Field Supervisor supports this mission through the cultivation of excellent produce and by creating a vibrant learning experience for our team members.

Hours: This is a seasonal salaried position starting April 1st, 2018 to the end of November, 2018. The hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 6:30 pm and Saturdays being spent at a local farmers market.

The right person will love all aspects of farm work, fine detailed seeding, weeding, cooking, and eating and is also approachable and pleasant, a good communicator, easy to work with and enjoys all aspects of the farming lifestyle. Details of the work involved include a variety of tasks to ensure sufficient production to supply our 4 weekly farmers markets.

There is affordable, on-site, living opportunities if that is suitable for a prospective employee.

Our dream is to bring someone on who is interested in farming as a career path and would like to make Ontario and Wicklow Way their home for the next few years.

Two to three years’ previous experience working on an organic farm is required. Supervisory experience is an asset though not critical as the farm owners can mentor you with this aspect of the job. The list below is a good example of daily tasks though there is some room for additions:

  • Seedling production
  • Care and feeding of hens and chickens
  • Cultivation/weeding
  • Transplanting
  • Pest management
  • Harvesting
  • Preparation of produce for markets
  • Maintaining daily journal entries
  • Crop/Harvest record keeping
  • Directing team members
  • Ability to drive farm vehicles
  • Excellent customer service
  • Maintain an organized and clean work environment
  • Attending a weekly farmers market

This position requires the candidate to be or to have a:

  • Valid drivers licence
  • Basic computer skills
  • Physically fit
  • Strong work ethic
  • Enthusiastic
  • A team player with good leadership skills
  • Able to work both independently and within a team
  • Willing to work in all weather conditions
  • Some experience with a tractor & roto-tiller
  • A sense of humour
  • Appreciation of cooking and eating well
  • A non-smoker

Salary will be negotiated depending on experience.
