Learn everything you need to know about sustainable farming by joining a large team of young farmers at Wheelbarrow Farm.
Wheelbarrow Farm is located an hour north-east of Toronto on 10 acres of rolling field and forest. We grow 7 acres of mixed organic vegetables and raise heritage breeds of pigs outdoors. Our mission is to build an environmentally sustainable farm that participates in building a more just and equitable local economy. Join myself and other young farmers for a fun and educational growing season. Accommodations are a trailer, 3 cabins, and private rooms in a house according to your tastes. This year we are also embarking on a many year permaculture project to remove invasive trees and replace them with native and fruit-bearing perennials.
Here are some of the things you’ll learn about: mixed vegetables (40 varieties), farmers’ markets, fertility management, permaculture, bees, pigs, greenhouses, building projects, small scale poultry, business planning. Apprentices are taken to 6 off farm day-long workshops during the season and also receive 6 half-day workshops on the farm.
Apprentices are expected to work 5 days a week. 7am-5pm. Food, a room and a $600 monthly stipend are provided for apprentices. 7 days of vacation/flex-time during the season.
Fun stuff: We are close to lakes, trails, and Toronto. There is a swimming pond on the farm now. Jam space for musicians. Campfires. Vegetable baseball.
