MARKET GARDENING / ORGANIC FARMING

Farm Internship with Whitsend Market Garden 2019 and access to starter farm property near Stittsville Ontario:

Position: Market garden / CSA veggie farming intern
Type: unpaid but with opportunity to take on the farm as we transition out
Market Garden: Whitsend Market Garden
Location: near Stittsville, Kanata & Ottawa, Ontario

Thinking about a career in modern agriculture? Looking for practical experience operating a CSA farm? Searching for a starter farm property near Ottawa?

Whitsend Market Garden is transitioning out of our starter farm location this year. We will require some assistance from an aspiring farmer with operating our own CSA while we move over the course of the season. As we transition out, YOU may take on our old property to start your first farm...

The land is certified organic. It consists of about 1.5 acres for produce and about .25 acres hay field. One acre is fenced. Potential for expanding leased area into neighboring fields.

The soil is Sandy Leitrim loam. The growing field has a slight southward slope to it, and drains well in the spring. There have been free range pigs on a portion of this acreage as the produce fields were developed.

Infrastructure included is part of a hay barn and a 70 foot deep well. The barn has a graveled work area around it suitable for sheds, prep tables, etc. There is access to electricity both inside and outside of the barn.

We are now in a transition period expected to last about 1 year, after which the property may be leased from the current land owner subject to owner and prospective renter negotiating a compatible agreement.

I am looking for an aspiring farmer able to commit a small amount of time managing a portion of our field and gradually taking on the entire farm location for their own use.

Ideally 2-3 days per week, approximately 12-18 hours.

Your internship can commence as early as March 2019.  Candidates who can commit to as much of our season as possible (March through October) will have their application prioritised.

Most of the time we will be working together producing food for the current CSA and preparing the location for your use as Whitsend transitions out. Work will be focussed on the entire range of tasks required for a successful market garden, from seeding and nursery work to havest and delivery prep. Soil cultivation, bed maintenance, compost production and fence maintenance are some of the takss required.

I have a wealth of knowledge to share about developing the field from pasture, building farm infrastructure, starting a business from scratch, and raising pastured pigs.

Terms to be discussed. There are lots of possibilities.

You may contact me at whitsmg@gmail.com . For more information about our farm, check out our blog at http://whitsfarm.blogspot.com/.
