About our farm:
We are a community-supported organic farm. Our 83 acre farm is located in Hillsburgh, Ontario (30 minutes from Guelph, 1 hour from Toronto. The farm is owned and operated by farmers Seb Ramirez and Bethany Klapwyk, and is supported by a strong community of friends, family, and clients.
The farm is a combination of greenhouses, gardens, hayfields, cedar forests, conservation wetland, a small orchard, and more!
You will be joining a team consisting of 2 interns, 2 farmers, 3 staff, and a number of occaisonal volunteers. Together we accomplish the task of offering a 22 week CSA (Community Shared Agriculture) program to 120 members, we offer produce at a Farmer’s Market, and we harvest for 30 weeks of deliveries to local restaurant and retail clients.
Below is a description of the roles that we are hiring for the 2019 season. Since we are a small farm, each person on the team takes part in all of the aspects of the farm, however these are the 3 areas of specialization.
The Harvest Coordinator plays a key role in coordinating the harvests that go to our three outlets: 120 CSA shares, 12 Restaurants, and 1 Farmer’s market. They work with the Farm Manager to track what is ready in the field, how much to harvest for each outlet, and how to efficiently harvest each crop. The Harvest Coordinator leads interns and volunteers to complete the required tasks. They share the responsibility for weekend field and greenhouse watering with the Field and Greenhouse Manager. Harvest Coordinator will also be involved in making deliveries to restaurants.
This position is Full Time, (40-50 hrs/week) from Apr 29-November 29th 2019
Field and Greenhouse Manager:
The Field and Greenhouse Manager takes a lead role in ensuring that the seeding and planting in our crop plan are kept on task, recorded, and managed. In the field and greenhouse they manage weeds, pests, and fertility. They will be using tools such as the Paper Pot transplanter, BCS walk-behind tractor, seeders, flamer weeder, and other equipment. They coordinate volunteers and interns and share the responsibility for weekend field and greenhouse watering with the Harvest Coordinator. Field and Greenhouse manager will also be involved in making deliveries to restaurants.
This position is Full Time, (40-50 hrs/week) from April 1st-November 29th 2019
Farmers’ Market Manager:
The Farmers’ Market Manager manages our booth at the Guelph Farmer’s Market. They are in charge of making harvest lists, harvesting, managing volunteers or interns who assist with market harvest, washing and packing, and delivering to market. The Farmers’ Market Manager will get crops to market on time, set up a beautiful display, track sales, and market. This role also includes a fair bit of general farm field-work on non-harvest days.
This position is Part Time, (30-35 hrs/week) from April 1st-November 29th 2019
have a driver’s license and are comfortable driving our farm van
have a minimum 2 full-season’s experience on a working vegetable farm and have a general understanding of soil biology, weed management, and organic farming principles
Have an interest in leadership, good work ethic, and self-development
Are humble, willing to take direction, and a clear communicator
Must work well independently and as a part of a team
Are self motivated and organized
Have a sense of humour
We grow intensively using the BCS walk-behind tractor, paper pot transplanter, quick-cut greens harvester, and pinpoint seeders. Experience with these tools is helpful but not necessary! When applying, please indicate which of these tools you are familiar and comfortable using.
Lastly, we would love to hire candidates who have an interest in working on our farm for multiple seasons. While we don’t expect a multi-year commitment, our intention is to find candidates who would consider this.
