Position: Organic Farm Intern
Type: full-time internship with room & board, monthly stipend, more (see below)
Organization: Lunar Rhythm Gardens
Location: Janetville / Kawartha Lakes/Durham Region, Ontario (near Lindsay)

We are a 100 acre Certified Organic farm in Janetville, Ontario. Located 30 mins west of Peterborough, 1 hour east of Toronto. We are looking for a few interns to help us grow for the 2018 growing season!

This will be our 9th season in operation, although it seems like it started just yesterday. We currently cultivate 10+ acres of organic vegetables, have about 15 acres of forest, and 60 in hay/pasture. Our farm is owned and operated by the daughter/father duo of Jessica and Dave Foote. Dave has been farming livestock for 30+ years, and Jessica runs the vegetable operation. We move our produce through a 100 member CSA, small weekly farmers markets and a growing list of wonderful wholesalers.

What sets Lunar Rhythm apart from most farms is our utilization of draft horses. Jessica is a passionate horse enthusiast, who aspires to use them in the fields every week. The horses do a lot of row cultivating which minimizes the amount of weeding that we have to do, and minimizes the impact on our fields/environment. If you are interested in horses in any manner, Jessica has a lot to teach. If you show an interest, and exhibit trustworthiness and responsibility, there is an opportunity for interns to work with the horses including harnessing, riding and/or driving. We do not force anybody to interact with the horses if they chose not to. Other animals we have on the farm include: chickens, ducks, ponies, cattle, dogs, cats, pigs and children.

As for expectations, we require that interns work 5.5 days a week (Monday to Saturday) from 7am-5pm, with a 6am start on harvest days (Tuesdays and Fridays). Interns will be directly involved with the operation of the farm, including tasks such as seeding, transplanting, weeding, pruning/trellising, harvesting and washing. Other opportunities include going to farmers markets, going to CSA drop off, delivering wholesale orders etc. Farming is a fun and enjoyable lifestyle, but it can also be very demanding and repetitive. We try to mix things up a bit so you're not stuck doing the same thing all the time, but there will be days where weeding is the only thing that you will do - it's just a part of organic agriculture. If you are interested in working with livestock, you will have the opportunity to do so. We prefer Interns to start April/May and finish at the end of October, but we also accept students who have to leave at the end of August.

We offer room and board, and a $400 monthly stipend, as well as a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the farming lifestyle. Housing options include trailers, rooms in the farm house, and rooms in our new processing facility. We provide food basics as well as vegetables/eggs/meat from the farm. New this year, we plan to implement a semi-weekly educational component consisting of presentations, guest speakers and farm tours/walks. We are also a part of CRAFT Kawartha, which involves going on a monthly farm tour to different local farms. We also frequent our neighbours beautiful pond when the weather is hot! There is also an opportunity to return in the following year, or stay during the winter, if you work out and enjoy the lifestyle.
